My friend, this gazelle does not know justice,

He offers me a cup and gives you two measures,

And claims that water is more conducive to healing

Than wine, so that we do not fault him for stinginess.

So do not blame me if his cup was protected,

And I refused the wine and chose from its saliva a sip,

For this is a popular disposition

That ignorance imagines to be wisdom.

Does he begrudge the cheap wine and deprive me

And allow the sweeter, more delicious, and more expensive?

I accepted him as a master, whether he was generous or stingy,

And angered or pleased, accepted or turned away.

For I am nothing but his slave and captive,

And the slave cannot be blamed for obeying the master.
