From the ever-flowing vine or from the vineyard

Freely pouring its gentle, fragrant stream?

Of meadow roses are you in your shyness,

O blushing rose, or from her rosy cheek?

O gentle breeze, who knows the lovely one

Whose sweet perfume you bear along or the scent of whose mouth?

That mouth which has robbed me of sleep, though unaware,

While of my love for it my tears bear witness.

No day of mine, no fear, no pain.

Nor by the black eyes I swear, that turn me not

From her, the hissing white swords on high.

Who will lend me patience when lightning flashes,

The lightning of her smile, pouring down tears like blood?

Who will beg union for me from the heart of a singing girl,

Like a keen sword that was never in love or grief?

As if her glances plot against her lover,

Swords of a loyal friend on a raiding night.

Best ruler, noblest of men, most generous

Of hand, most just of rulers, wise in wisdom.

Chieftain who revealed valor on the heights with his sword

And destroyed the creed of stinginess with generosity.

Gentle to mankind unless when to foes he smiles

The smile of the lion at prey—how terrible!

Glory to Him who created him elegant in manner,

Generous in giving, and magnificent in age.

If the wind threatened, its gusts did not appear,

Or if the lion roared, he emerged not from his den.

O wakeful of eye, sleep now, for the eye of the Exalted has watched

Over the deposits left with the Lord of mankind.

And He renewed security for us through an Omnipotent One

Whose youth the turns of sudden events made mature.

So today no lion domineers over a lamb

In his injustice, nor Arab over foreigner.
