أنا الذي اخترت آل الشام لي ندما

فغادروني سخين العين وا ندما

I am the one who chose the people of Syria as companions,

Then they left me with tearful eyes and regret.

تقاسموا عين مالي فاحترصت على

قلبي فجارت عليه العين فانقسما

They divided the wealth I owned, so I protected

My heart, but eyes assaulted it till it split.

ما كان أجمل صبري بين أنصلةٍ

أحدُّها الأعينُ الوسنانةُ السَّقَما

The most difficult of what I endured was when

My eyes, those alluring sick ones, betrayed me.

مررت بين المواضي لا أرى قدمي

فما أراق دمي إلا عيون دُمَى

I walked amongst the meadows, not seeing my feet.

Only the blood of bleeding eyes reddened me.

صرَّحت يا جورَ جيراني بغدرك لي

وأنت يا لحظَ خلاني غدرتَ وما

I complained, O oppressor neighbors, of your betrayal,

And you, O fleeting moment, betrayed me yet.

لقد تشفَّت قلوب الحاسدين بنا

وخاننا الدهر يا لمياء واحتكما

The hearts of enviers delighted in us,

And fate betrayed us, O Lamiya, and judged.

فكان أصعبَ ما لاقيت هجرُك لي

وكان أسهلَ ماعانيت جورُهما

The most difficult was your abandonment of me,

And the easiest was their injustice I bore.

أجرى الفوارس ما أجرى المدامع ما

فمال طرفك يُجري ماءها عَنَما

The knights did as the tears did, not

Diverting your gaze that sheds them no more.

إن كان هجرك من نوع الدلال فما

أحلى وطيب منه يا دلالُ لَمى

If your abandonment was a kind of coquetry,

None is sweeter or finer than you, O coquette.

جوري به جورَ مولود يحب ولو

أعيى أباه ووشَّى أمه الهرما

Oppress me, it’s the oppression of a newborn babe

Who loves his father though he’s blinded him in age.

ولا تبالي بميل المال وانتحبى

على مجوهر شملٍ زال وانفصما

Don’t care for wealth or grieve over a ruined

Union that's vanished and split two ways.

ردَّ النحيبُ عليك العقد مكتملاً

لكنه كان يا قوتاً وصار دما

Sobs returned your necklace to you complete

Though it was, O strength, blood, and is blood again.

هذا الذي تركته الشام منتثراً

وذاك ما أخذ الظُلّامُ منتظما

This is what Syria left scattered about,

And that is what darkness took, well-arranged.

ما دام في جيدك الوضاح ملتمعاً

طوق السلامة لم نحفل بما عدما

As long as the clarity in your cheek is gathered,

The collar of well-being, we care not what's missed!

قومي انظري كيف تنهال الشآم على

سكانها واطلبي من غيرها حرما

Rise, look how Al-Sham showers destruction on

Its people. Seek refuge elsewhere, O large-eyed doe.

إن كان في الشام لم يسلم لنا وطنٌ

فمصر فيها لدى المولى السعيد حمى

If in Al-Sham no homeland was left safe for us,

In Egypt is the noble master's sanctuary.

خير الملوك أباً أسخى الملوك يداً

أنقى الملوك رِداً أذكى الملوك فما

The best of kings, a father most generous,

The purest defending, wisest whose glory

ملك متى قام للرحمن منتصراً

أمات بالروع قبل السيف من ظلما

Whenever a king rose for the Merciful, victorious,

Killed by awe before the sword those who oppressed.

ما ماج موج المنايا في صوارمه

إلا وأغرق من ناواه مضطرما

The waves of death never surged in his swords

Except to drown those who sought them, burning.

يضاعف النظر الأخبار عنه ومن

لا ينظر الدر لم يعرف له قيما

Looking multiplies reports of him, and whoever

Doesn't see the jewel won't know its price.

تدرع العدل طفلاً والعفاف فتى

وثلَّث الفضل والتقوى وزانهما

He clothed justice in youth and chastity in strength

And gave excellence, piety and faith their share.

وما ثنى عزمَهُ عن بيت خالقه ال

عام الذي بنحوسٍ عمَّتِ اِتُّهِمَا

His resolve for his Creator's house never bent

Except the year the two Sad days overshadowed.

نال المُنى بمِنى والسعد يخدمه

وزار طه ووشَّى البيت والحرما

He attained his wishes in Mina and lived prosperously,

Visited Tah and adorned the House and Sanctuary.

وفاز فوزاً عظيماً وانثنى ثملاً

جذلان كالصب عاطاه الحبيب لمى

And won a mighty victory, bowed down in thanks

Like a young lamb, given to the beloved as gift.

ليت الذي صنع المرحوم والده

بالشام علمها أن تحفظ الذمما

If only he who the late king wronged in Syria

Knew to protect the oaths that were broken!

دكت فواجرها داري ولا عجبٌ

قد دكَّ قومُ يزيدَ الركنَ والحرما

Its transgressions demolished my house—no wonder!

A people who attacked the Holy Mosque and Sanctuary,

ونددوا ببنات المصطفى ورموا

رأس الحسين وضحُّوا آله الرُحَما

Who denounced the Prophet’s daughters and threw

Al-Husayn’s head, severing his family ties.

وأشبعوا الوحش من أنصاره وأبوا

أن يدفنوا بسوى أرواثها الرمما

Who fed the beasts with his supporters and refused

To bury them except amongst ruins and rubble.

مولاي جلقُ والأخيارُ تعرفها

حنت إليك حنين الطفل منفطما

My master—the virtuous know him.

My longing for you is like a weaned child’s craving.

ألا تعيد عليها الأمنَ مبتسماً

وأنتَ في عرشها للناس منتقما

Won’t you smile and restore security?

While you reign, avenging people’s rights?

أبوك أهلك شطراً من فواجرهم

فصفه بيتاً بشطرٍ آخرٍ كرما

Your father destroyed half of their transgressors,

So add another house with your generosity.

من يتبع الحق لم تعثر له قدمٌ

ومن تخلق بالآباء ما ظلما

One who follows truth will never stumble,

And one who acts like the forebears will not oppress.

ترى أُلامُ على الشكوى وقد بلغ ال

سيل الزبى وتناهى الخطب بي عظما

You see my laments though the floods of calamity peaked,

And worries exhausted me, however great.

أم يعذر الحرُّ عبداً قل ناصره

فجاء والأرض فرشٌ والغطاءُ سما

Or will the free man excuse a slave whose supporter vanished,

So he came while the earth was a carpet and sky his cover?

دامت لطلعتك الأيام باسمةً

ودمت يا علم الدنيا لنا علما

May your days remain smiling,

And may you, O pride of the world, remain our pride!
