    هذا خيال المطلع الوردي

    Do not fear the redness of roses

  2. فهنا هنا كانت مودعتي

    وهنا هنا سفرت عن الخد

    For here, here was my farewell

    And here, here I journeyed from the cheek

  3. وهنا تباعد عن فمي فمها

    ونأت ودام غرامها عندي

    And here her mouth distanced from mine

    Yet her love remains with me

  4. بلّت حصى الوادي بمدمعها

    فوددت لو أن الحصى خدي

    The pebbles of the valley shed her tears

    I wish those pebbles were my cheek

  5. ونأت تقول اصبر على بعدي

    وأنا أقول لها اسلمي بعدي

    She said, be patient with my absence

    And I said to her, "Farewell after me"

  6. نون النوى يا مي مانعةٌ

    للجمع بين الصبر والوجد

    The letter Noon of purpose, O water, prevents

    Reunion of patience and passion

  7. من يشتري صبري بريقتها

    حتى أبيع الصبر بالشهد

    Who will buy my patience for her smile?

    So I can sell patience for honey

  8. أو مانحي من نومه فرصاً

    أدعو الخيال بها إلى مَهدي

    Or give me a respite from his sleep

    To summon with it my imagination to my bed

  9. هيهات آمالي تعللني

    وتعلة الولهان لا تجدي

    Alas, my hopes make excuses for me

    And the excuse of the lovesick is futile

  10. يا ليلة زفت كواكبها

    للناس والنهدين لي وحدي

    O night who has adorned her stars

    For people, while my bosom alone for me

  11. وجلت لنا القمرين خيرهما

    ما كان بين التاج والعقد

    And prepared for us the better of two moons

    What was between crown and necklace

  12. عودي لنا لتعودنا فُنُقٌ

    برء الضنا برضابها القندي

    Return to us to return us to the honeyed melody

    Curing the singer's hoarseness

  13. في ثغرها بردٌ يقول إذا

    ما ذاقه المحرور وا بردي

    In her mouth there is a coolness that says

    When tasted by the feverish, "My coolness"

  14. شامية فعلت لواحظها

    بجوانحي ما يفعل الهندي

    Her Syrian charm made for her cheeks

    What the Indian charm makes for the bosom

  15. ما شمت نوناً مثل حاجبها

    طوراً تغيث وتارةً تجدي

    I never sensed a letter Noon like her eyebrows

    Sometimes bringing rain, other times shining

  16. إلّا لأحمد حين يكتب لا

    عان يساء ولا صدٍ يكدي

    Except for Ahmed when he writes "No"

    Harm is intended, nor enmity borne

  17. شكري الذي شكري له شرفي

    وتغزلي بكماله مجدي

    My pride, for which I thank him

    And my glory from his perfection derives

  18. حمال أثقال الرجال إذا

    كاد الرجال تقاعد الجد

    Bearer of men's burdens, though

    Men would retire from effort

  19. في دسته قمرٌ على فلكٍ

    وبسرجه ليثٌ على نهد

    In his hand, a moon on a celestial orbit

    And with his saddle, a lion on a bosom

  20. نهدت لأوج المجد همته

    قبل امتصاص عقيقة النهد

    For the summit of glory, his ambition rose

    Before suckling the ruby of the nipple

  21. لولاه لا فرسي مسوَّمةٌ

    كلا ولا سَرَقي على جلدي

    Without him, neither my thoroughbred horses

    Nor my garments on my skin

  22. يا من تطوف ببيت نائله

    آمالنا وتعج بالحمد

    O you who circumambulate the house of my hopes fulfilled

    And swell with praise

  23. ما كان يوم العيد ينقصني

    غير اللقا فحرمته وحدي

    On feast day I lacked nothing

    Except seeing him, so I deprived myself, alone

  24. خلت النضار دماً فأخرني

    عن باب غاب الضيغم الغرد

    The blossoms shed blood, so excuse me

    From the door, for the warblers have departed

  25. حتى إذا استوضحته ذهباً

    ورأيته يجري بلا عد

    Until, when I discerned it as gold

    And saw it flowing endlessly

  26. وافيت والآمال قائلة

    رد لا تخف من حمرة الورد

    I came, and my hopes were saying

    "Do not fear the redness of the roses"
