The white swords adorned the mistress of corpses
With the blackness of eyes shedding blood
And she ruled over the lovers, so they left
Their tears flowing gently and fiercely
Passion for the eyes of an Arab maiden
Made the necks of men bow to them
Why do you oppose me, Saad?
As long as your love rules the hearts of worshippers
The leaders say there is no blame upon
The sickness of your eyelids, O feverish one
Even the investigator Ahmad says
The ailing glance bears no sin when it casts
And the minister's brother, a man
Who judges as the Holy Book taught and educated
Spending his mornings and evenings bestowing
Or asking, or speaking, or gaining, or favoring
His opinion and sword relieve troubles
And relieve hearts when he rules and when he sheds blood
God gave him the name Ahmad for he became
The highest and most praised in heaven and on earth
O you whom when given authority
He takes under his wing the righteous and judges firmly
I never gloated when the Sultan was honored
In the councils of nobles without the likes of you
He who gold took in place of the husband
Whom the executioner took, as if the ruler was infatuated
You bent Ma'n's spear, and Ma'n's spears
Used to be carried with the youths when thrown
So I will praise you for what I witnessed
For I am tired of imagined praise
For the locust tree was long vacant of might
And the warbling nightingale, a speechless chatterer
And long have I called the limping bear
A lion, and the insignificant sparrow an eagle
I praised my Lord when He opened my hearing
To you, O protector, and averted blindness from my eyes
O best of those the ground lifted to the sky
And who lifted with his bloom the face of the sky
The jurisprudence of al-Suli is not lasting
If it intoxicates, it sobers into an educated heart
None but you was pleased to absorb its blows
Most delicious to the eloquent than biting
So open, my ransom, though not ordered
The mouth of acceptance and cease blaming it
And make its rewards seeking a position
For me through your generosity, may it be honored
In this world I hope for its benefit
Not in the Hereafter, righteous or wicked
I collared the most hated owl to you with dew
Will you not collar the one infatuated with you?
