Greetings of peace from the magnificence of open country,

O nightingale of eloquence and rhetoric,

Delight me with the brocade of joy and leave me

Shrouded in my sorrow and misery,

Shall I be illuminated by stars in cups

And by a doe's glance at the watering place?

When time has burdened me and unloaded on me

Until my jewels and glory were lost,

After Abraham shall my company be praised

Or after Layla shall my confidences be desired?

Joy is dead, so a heart cannot be gladdened again

With the finest of steeds and most generous of men,

No fragrance remains after the bride has fled,

Gloom has erased mankind, O my Master!
