Do you remember Layla and our nights of passion?
For we heard her sighs in the darkness of night.
Did the breeze carry the fragrance of her breath?
For we smelled her sweet perfume from afar.
My soul cries for Layla though she cares not,
For the likes of me, nor feels pity in her heart.
If she'd think of me just for a day,
She'd regret leaving me in sadness and sorrow.
And have mercy on a youth whose heart left patience,
As patience itself had already left his heart.
Perhaps it was Layla that I heard in the dark,
A gracious, just, and noble queen.
May the Lord bless her throne, glorious and holy,
For her wisdom, and choose her to lead the land.
When asked who crossed the desert and braved the seas,
Disregarding danger with utmost gallantry,
She will say it's the best of men, the most gracious father,
The highest in station, the most magnanimous in heart.
So all the people will know she refers to
Sa'id, whose virtues have spread through Egypt.
