O night when Layla left without my soul
And left me suffering the heat of my breath
Were it not for you, the light of sun would not shine in my eyes
Nor would the darkness of grave envelope my lamp
Nor would the wind dry my comfort and dim my eyes
And my tears became my drink and sadness my cup
Where is she whose absence made me say
What the poet of Abbasids said
How ugly people seem to my eyes when I look
And do not find you among the people
After the grieved one sat to comfort me
O night of ill omen playing with my worries
And after the most radiant lamps of my intellect died out
The light of Layla's face lit my lamp
O Layla's grave, note Layla has unveiled for you
The meadows of roses and myrtle
Smile at her and take pride in the glittering beauty
That once shone around me in the morning
May God not cool a soul that
Cooled my breath with endurance
Or married me to patience or drove my horse
After Layla, to joys and weddings
They said, "You forgot Ibrahim," I said, "No people
I live if I was forgetful of him forgetful"
Nor did my feet rest between the companions of highness
If my head harbored any but them
