1. لو لم تنل من لماها الراح أنعاما

    ما صار راووقها كالدر إن عاما

    Had she not given me sips from her soft drink

    Her pitcher would not become like a pearl over the years

  2. فعاطنيها على ورد الخدود طلاً

    كالورد عاطاه كافور النعامى ما

    So I kissed her rosy cheeks seeking more

    As musk deer scent the meadows for musk

  3. من كف غانية تركيةٍ تركت

    ألحاظها العرَب العرباء أعجاما

    A hand of a singing Turkish beauty she left

    The Arabs, men and women, bewildered

  4. لا يفقهون حديثاً حين تسألهم

    عنها فتحسبهم في الحي أنعاما

    They do not understand her words when asked

    You'd think them mute beasts grazing

  5. باتت تنولني من كان عانسةٍ

    في الدن جاماً ومن عذب اللَمى جاما

    She stayed up pouring wine for me from her

    Cup and from the sweetest drink, a cup

  6. فخلتها بين كاسات الطلا قمراً

    يستعرض الشهب أفراداً وإتآما

    Leaving her amid wine cups like a moon

    Parading stars in single file and in groups

  7. في روضةٍ من رياض الشام يانعةٍ

    يعمها الزهر وضاحاً وبساما

    In a meadow of Damascus' gardens, blooming

    With flowers and aromatic plants abound

  8. كأنه في رباها جيش ملحمةٍ

    مدت عليه غصون الدوح أعلاما

    As if an army in it

    The branches of the lote tree their flags around

  9. أو فتيةٌ حول ماء النهر تنظر في

    صحائف ملأتها الريح أرقاما

    Or youths around river water looking at

    Pages the wind filled with lines

  10. تلك التي لامني شيخي وعنفني

    فيها وحين رآها لام من لاما

    She, for whom my mentor blamed me and admonished me

    And when he saw her, blamed the one who blamed

  11. فيا لها فُنُقاً دُرْماً مرافقها

    يحظى مُرافِقُها منها بما راما

    With her beauty and thick wavy hair

    Her companion is privileged by her care

  12. أعطى الجمال لها من لين قامتها

    رمحاً ومن لحظها الوسنان صمصاما

    Her soft figure endowed her with spears

    And her glances endowed her with swords

  13. لولا انتظام ثناياها ورقتها

    ما رق شعري ولا أصبحت نظّاما

    Had her thighs and torso not been well-formed

    My poetry would not have flowed nor would I versify

  14. ولا أراني الهوى لولا لواحظها

    سيفاً لأفئدة السلوان جرّاما

    Nor would passion have made me, but for her glances

    A sword piercing the hearts of the sleek and obese

  15. ما حيلتي فيه والأجفان قائمةٌ

    مقامه إن صحا للفتك أو ناما

    I have no tricks with her, while my eyelids

    Keep ready whether she chooses vengeance or sleeps

  16. أعطى لأهدابها الباري مآربها

    فخلتها لفؤاد الملك أقلاما

    Her eyelashes were given their coquetry by God

    Leaving them to pierce the hearts of kings

  17. ليثٌ يهاب فؤاد الدهر صولته

    فيوسع الناس إعزازاً وإكراما

    A lion whom the hearts of time fear his ferocity

    So people honor him increasingly

  18. بضُّ الطوية لو طاءت ركائبه

    على وجوه اليالي صرن أياما

    The mounts would kneel if his pavilions

    Were erected for them for days and nights

  19. لا يتقي اللوم في شوط السماحة وال

    تقوى ولو صارت الأملاك لوّاما

    He who fears no blame in gallantry and piety

    Even if possessions blame

  20. أعرى المشاكل بالرأي السديد من ال

    إبهام فانقلب الإبهام إعلاما

    He uncovered truths with the soundest opinion and reasoning

    And turned ambiguity into clarity

  21. فيا له بطلاً دكَّ الريا وبنى

    للعدل والفضل أسواراً وأعلاما

    What a hero who trod the mill, built

    Fortresses and flags for justice and merit

  22. من سادةٍ طهر الرحمن فطرتهم

    واختارهم لجميع الناس حكّاما

    Of masters whom the Merciful purified

    And chose to rule all people

  23. ما ساق حبُّ الحنا للشر ذا قدمٍ

    إلّا وأفرد عنه الساق والهاما

    No step to evil did the love of splendor take

    Except that the leg and zeal singled it out

  24. بالأمس كنّا ضحايا جارنا فغدا

    بئس الضحية لما مهد الشاما

    Yesterday we were victims of our neighbor but today

    Miserable the victim since greeting Damascus

  25. هذا بذاك وعدنا للوداد وإن

    عادوا فصارمه ما زال صرّاما

    This for that and we returned to affection

    And if they return, my sword remains sharp

  26. يا جوهر الشرف التام الذي انقسمت

    أعداؤه بسيوف الروع أقساما

    O quintessence of perfect nobility

    Whose enemies my sword divided into groups

  27. الملك دائرةٌ تقسيمها عسرٌ

    ما دمت فيها لهامِ الغي قسّاما

    The realm is a circle dividing which is hard

    As long as you remain in it, discerning of raving

  28. أعملت رأيك فانجاب الفساد وأن

    قذت البلاد وأبقيت الصفا تاما

    You acted with your wisdom answering corruption

    And rescued the country while keeping probity perfect

  29. ولو دعا غيرك المولى المجيد لها

    صارت لخنصر نابليون خاتاما

    Had another called for it, My Glorious Master

    It would have become to Napoleon a seal

  30. فلا برحت سديد الرأي ذا هممٍ

    تغادر الشوس يوم الروع أغناما

    So you remained sound of opinion, with ambition

    That abandons imprudence in times of panic

  31. ودمت برّاً ترى الدنيا محبته

    فرضاً ومدحته وحياً وإلهاما

    And you remained righteous, seeing the world

    As an obligation, praising it and with inspiration
