The black eyes attacked us with love and war,
And ignited flames of passion in our breasts,
They conquered with their killing glances and were victorious,
The world belongs to those who overcome and conquer.
She has eyes never touched by sleeplessness,
On her cheek dawn glows enslaving manners.
Willowy, tender limbs, smooth fingers
Loved by nobles and elite suitors alike.
She's no mortal but an angelic houri,
With heavenly beauty for all worlds to admire.
I can't forget her visage, my eyes don't wander,
The meteors don't move from the neck's horizon.
Her smile reveals pearls that protect
Against harm, if cruel times should strike.
Like a garden when it's brightened by dawn
And morning leaps over the army of darkness.
The light of her beauty made her veil
Gleam saffron when gilded by gold.
How much magic appeared from her
At night, with a moon's radiant joy.
She reminds me of my youth and its pastimes,
Those nights that later brought me distress.
She walks gracefully, driving away sorrows,
Glowing red, amazing those who see.
She passed me by, but I couldn't let her go
And craved her saliva, desiring her more.
She laughed and turned from me, refusing
To let me quench my thirst, for my hair had greyed.
As if what I held was once pearls in my youth,
Now in old age becoming dry, withered seeds.
Woe to white hair that turned away a time
When pleasures fulfilled my ambitious dreams.
It left, so the full moons of bliss set
And the light of loyalty and favor hid away.
Oh she whose love bruised my heart
And whose bonds choked my veins.
Those who blamed me for loving now pardon me,
My torment became pleasant in her eyes.
Whoever claims the turns of fate make
Eyes act this way has lied, oh my hope!
Nothing can defeat your eyes, except
Our Lord’s swords when they strike and stab.
The best and noblest is Abdelkader the hero
Destroyer of sin, protector of the devout.
The best who rose defending the Beneficent
Willingly, the most generous giver.
A light granted by the throne of chivalry
From the Prophet's soul, towering and sublime.
A blade in God's hands, the true faith sought help from it
So it disgraced and destroyed the enemy.
God granted him a brilliant mother from His essence
And a father of perfection and completion from His Spirit.
If he had greeted the new moon, it wouldn't have set,
And if he had approached the full moon, it wouldn't have waned.
Glory to his Creator! When misfortunes
Clung to him, drawing near to God made him needless of nearness.
He defends his neighbor like a leopard defends her cubs,
Repelling the days and wars.
He doesn't refuse a youth in need even if
He had to take the stars' place to fulfil his request.
Distress leaves those who live close to him
Never leaving, even if distant, out of yearning.
If anything fasted but not for God, he would fast
A month, pray on Eid, and draw near.
His Lord named him a servant of the Able, the Generous
And named him the father of generosity and gift-giving.
God revealed upon him the knowledge and manners of his father
And poured wisdom and etiquette into him.
So he was ennobled in lineage, ennobled in merit,
Endowed with sublime manners, the best etiquette.
And ennobled with an ancestor the full moon shone through
A lion would have fled if perceiving his scent.
I saw him and through him saw that people
Were dust darkening Arab and non-Arab.
Lofty, valiant, more righteous than the devout
More eloquent than the articulate and writers.
He revives with his flood-like generosity
The dead-hearted, leaving no request unfulfilled for the beseecher.
Oh best of those whose gifts immersed the horizon
And hosts of guests had provinces provisioned.
Fasting passed but my fast remained unbroken
Eid came but my exile stayed unending.
How can one celebrate when dismissed
By the King, war and woes becoming his lot?
If you wish to renew my favor with advice
Then counsel me aloud, best of writers.
For the pen is like a thread when abandoned, my support,
While the tongue is like practiced spear-throwing.
May God grant you an Eid with no end,
You whose praise of people is an obligation.
