1. ذاك الفراق وان أصم مسامعي

    لم يخل من هذا اللقاء مطامعي

    That separation, though it deafened my hearing,

    Did not fail my hopes for this meeting.

  2. فلذاك لم يبلغ بي الظمأ المدي

    حتى أعاد إلي العذيب مشارعى

    So my thirst did not fully reach me,

    Until the one I love brought back my streets.

  3. لم ابقي بعد البعد لولا أنني

    فارقت أحبابي بنية راجع

    I would not have remained after being far, had I not

    Parted from my loved ones intending to return.

  4. إن غبت عن دار همو بربوعها

    فالي حمي نشأوا به ومرابع

    If I was absent from the abode of my worries in its expanse,

    Then to me belong those who were raised in it and its plains.

  5. ما الشأن في بين توقعت اللقا

    في منهاه فكان اقرب واقع

    What is the matter that I expected meeting

    In its endpoint, yet it was nearer occurring.

  6. الشأن في هذا الذي أخشى به

    أن الحمام يكون عنهم قاطعي

    The matter is this, that I fear with it

    That the pigeons are cutting off from them.

  7. قد كنت غبت وفي ضميري عودة

    ورجعت بالأشواق رجعة طالع

    I had been absent yet in my conscience a return,

    And I came back with yearnings, an ascending return.

  8. والآن كيف يكون حالي ان نأت

    داري وسرت إلى مكان شاسع

    And now how could my state be if I come

    To my house and went to a vast place.

  9. أأروم أن أبقي وان بعد المدي

    هيهات ما أنا في البقاء بطامع

    Would I want to remain despite the distance?

    Never! I have no greed for remaining.

  10. يا جيرة بعدوا وحاوا في الحشا

    وعلى الحقيقة في أجل مواضع

    O neighbor, they went far, so talk in the truthful

    And supreme places.

  11. لو لم تطو هذا التراب لما غدا

    طهر اتباح به الصلاة لراكع

    If this soil did not contain you, it would not have become

    Pure, made permitted for prayers for bowing.

  12. قبس النهار ضياء من نوركم

    وبكم تالق كل برق لامع

    A ray of daylight, illumination from your light,

    And by you every flashing lightning shone.

  13. وليهتدي السارى بنور سنا كمو

    جدتم على بدر السماء الطالع

    And let the one traveling be guided by the light of your brilliance,

    As you rose over the full moon in the sky.

  14. فسقي حمي شرفت بكم ارجاؤه

    ما شاء من صوب الدموع الهامع

    So water the honor that was ennobled by you,

    Whatever it wished from the pouring tears.

  15. حتى يروى كالحيا هضب الحمى

    ويفيض بين اباطح وأرجاع

    Until it flows like the serpent, the plateau of honor,

    And overflows between the sand dunes and small dunes.

  16. يا سادتي قسماً بايام مضت

    بكم وقد عادت إليه طائع

    O my masters, I swear by the days

    That have passed with you and obediently returned to it.

  17. لو لم اعلل مهجتي بلقائكم

    لم يستقر القلب بين اضالعي

    If I did not busy my inner self with meeting you,

    My heart would not have settled between my ribs.

  18. خلوا فؤادي في الحمى ونواظرى

    كرمالا ذكر عندكم بوادعئعي

    Leave my heart in the honorable abode and my sight

    Like a lover, mentioning you with my farewell.

  19. قالوا الرحيل وما تملت باللقلء

    عيني ولا امتلأت بغير مدامعي

    They said, "Depart," And my eyes never had their fill of meeting

    Nor filled with anything but tears.

  20. فتيقنت روحي بأن مقاهلم

    ان يصدق الحادي اشد مضارعي

    So I was certain in my soul that their dwelling

    Is more difficult to reach if the guide spoke truthfully.

  21. ووقفت بين تأمل وتململ

    يبدو السرور على فؤادي الجازع

    And I stood between contemplation and fidgeting,

    Happiness appears in my sad heart.

  22. حين أن لا أدري لقرب رائق

    أذري المدامع أم لبين رائع

    When I do not know whether the proximity of comfort

    Makes me shed tears or the separation between us.

  23. أهدى تحية قادم وتوهمي

    قرب الترحل بالوداع منازعي

    I send greetings like a newcomer and imagine

    The nearing departure with opponents bidding me farewell.

  24. يامقلتي خل البكاء ليجتلي

    بصري سنا هذا الضياء الساطع

    O my tears, stop crying so my vision may clear

    To see the brilliance of this shining light.

  25. فالحجرة الغراء قد لحت لنا

    خوفاً على الأبصار تحت براقع

    For the sublime room has melted for us

    In fear over the sights beneath the veils.

  26. فتمتعي ولك الأمان من العمى

    بمن اكتحلت بنوره المتتابع

    So enjoy and you have safety from blindness

    With those you lined your eyes with their consecutive light.

  27. بالله ياحادي الركائب سحرة

    قف بالمطي ولو كنعسة هاجع

    For God's sake O guide of the riding camels, stop

    In the resting place even if sleepy and dormant.

  28. لأبث أشواقى واكتب قصتي

    أسفا بدام من جفوني دامع

    To send my passions and write my tale

    Regretfully with the ink of tears from my eyelids flowing.

  29. وعسى أقوم بباب حجرة أحمد

    قبل الوداع مقام عبد خاضع

    And perhaps I stand at the door of Ahmed's chamber

    Before bidding farewell, standing like a humble slave.

  30. في موقف جبريل قام مسائلا

    فيه الرسول معلما للسامع

    In the position Gabriel stood, questioning

    Him the Messenger, teaching the listener.

  31. حيث الملائكة الكرام تحف من

    ذاك المقام بساجد وبراكع

    Where the honorable angels surround

    That position - bowing down and kneeling.

  32. وأقول يا خير الورى أزف النوب

    وبدون نيل رضاك لست بقانع

    And I say, O best of creation, the pigeons call

    And without attaining your approval I am not content.

  33. أنا عبدك الجاني الذي لم اخش من

    ذنبي العظيم وجاد ملك شافعي

    I am your sinful slave who did not fear

    His great sin while the King intercessor was generous.

  34. أنت الكريم وليس سعي مقصر

    في سعيد عند الكريم بضائع

    You are Most Generous, and the effort of one who falls short

    Is not lost with the Most Generous.

  35. لا تسال العرب الكرام نزيلهم

    عما جناه ولو أتي بفظائع

    The noble Arabs do not ask their guest

    About what sins he committed even if grave.

  36. هاجرت بل تاجرت فيك بمهجتي

    شوقا وحبك كان جل بضائعي

    I emigrated to you with my innermost being

    Yearning and loving you was most of my merchandise.

  37. فاملأ رحالي بالنوال لا نثني

    مستغنيا عن باذل أومانع

    So fill my saddlebags with bounty, I will not

    Turn needing no giver or preventer.

  38. إن لم تكن لشديد فقرى رافعا

    عند الإله فما له من رافع

    If you do not lift the severity of my poverty

    To God, then who can lift me.

  39. وافيت بابك حين ضاق بذلتي

    ذرعي وخابت بالذنوب ذرائعي

    I came to your door when my own generosity constricted me,

    My tools failed and the means to sin were cut off.

  40. أيضيق عن ذنبي وان ضاق الفضا

    عنه حمى هذا النوال الواسع

    Can it narrow because of my sin even if the horizon

    Is too narrow for it, protector of this vast generosity.

  41. ياسيدي ووسيلتي أنا خائف

    من هول يوم ماله من دافع

    My master and my connection, I am afraid

    Of the horror of a day that has no defender.

  42. ان لم تغثنى بالشفاعة في غد

    القيته لشقاى غير مدافع

    If you do not help me with intercession tomorrow

    I meet it with misery, having no defense.

  43. مولاي زودني فاني راحل

    لضرورة قامت مقام موانع

    My Master, equip me for I am leaving

    Due to an obligation that took the place of preventers.

  44. سفري بعيد والذنوب كثيرة

    وسوي رضاك على ليس بنافع

    My journey is far and sins great,

    And bringing your approval is not useful to one who falls short.

  45. مع أنني أرجو الإياب وليس ذا

    مما يعز على المشت الجامع

    Even though I hope to return and not being able

    Is not too difficult on the aspirations of the collector.

  46. يا أكرم الكرماء ها أنا واقف

    برحاء منشرح وخشية ضارع

    O most generous of the generous, here I stand

    With hopeful serenity and pleading fear.

  47. أرجو وأخشي غير إني واثق

    بندا يديك وثوق راجع قاطع

    I hope and fear without that I trust

    In the bounty of your hands, certain return, definite.

  48. فامنن على بزورة أخرى عسي

    أسعى إليك أمام كل مسارع

    So favor me with another visit, hopefully

    I will strive toward you ahead of all others.

  49. صلى عليك الله ما هبت صبا

    وهفت غصون بالحمام الساجع

    May God send blessings upon you whenever the breeze blew

    And the branches waived with the slumbering pigeons.

  50. واعادلي هذى العهود على الحما

    بين الضريح وبين منبر شافعي

    And restore these covenants to me over the honorable abode

    Between the shrine and the platform of the intercessor.
