O night when the cup's rim clung to my mouth,

For your sake, the darkness of my heart and eyes.

If I spread dead youth, for your loss

Has killed what life remained in me.

You allowed me a drink, though the slanderers knew,

On his brow, and the aroma of its sprinkling is fragrant.

In a garden, whenever its coats touched it,

The branches hid themselves in leaves.

And he put out, with the sweet cooled from its

Waters, what fires my cheek kindled.

And I spent the night, the round moon in my hands,

I wound that black hair round my neck.

And she came hurrying, her face red toward it,

So two suns appeared on the horizon.

The folds of his gown sucked its whiteness, as

The sunset cast redness on her cheek.

And he said, "Lower than her, if you wish, from my cup,

Or from my juicy lip, or my languid eye.

Every goblet, though you doubt, O my lip

And this cup, so choose what you wish to taste."

O night I spent it strangely,

The sun clinging to me, the moon embracing me!
