1. آن التأهب للرحيل

    فقفوا على الرسم المحيل

    The time of departure has come

    So stop at the difficult threshold

  2. وأبكوا على العزم الصحيح

    ينوء بالجسد العليل

    And cry over the right resolve

    As the frail body bows down

  3. روح تخف إلى الحمى

    فتفوقها ثاء الثقيل

    A soul growing faint with fever

    Overcomes it with its heaviness

  4. فكأنها الأثر الخف

    ي يلوح في عافي الطلول

    As if it were the faint trace

    Gleaming through the meadows at dusk

  5. قطع الزمان رجاءها

    باليأس من صلة الوصول

    Time has cut off its hopes

    With despair at attaining union

  6. فتشبثت من زائري

    تلك المعالك بالذيول

    So it clung to the tails of my visitors

    To those battlefields

  7. وغدت تناشد من رأت

    فيه إمارات القبول

    And it began to implore those

    In whom it saw signs of acceptance

  8. يا راكب الوجناء تج

    ذب في البرى ذيل الذميل

    O rider of the saddled camel wandering

    In the wilds, dragging the tail of affliction

  9. تختال في حبر الشرو

    ق ضحى وفي حلل الصيل

    Strutting in the ink of the east at dawn

    And in the garments of the late morning

  10. وتحوم من نهر المجر

    ة كالنجوم على مسيل

    Circling above the river of death

    Like stars above a watercourse

  11. ألف السرى حتى بدا

    مثل الأهلة في النحول

    Having grown accustomed to the path

    Until appearing emaciated and frail

  12. يفري الغلاة وماله

    غير التشوق من دليل

    The extremists flee while they have

    Naught but longing to guide them

  13. ويزيد ري جفونه

    ما بالأضالع من محول

    And the tears in his eyelids increase

    What flows from his ribs

  14. ونسيم برق الأبرقين

    يلوح كالسيف الصقيل

    And the breeze from lightning flashes

    Gleams like a polished sword

  15. فيبيت يحتسب الكرى

    ويطيب نفساً عن قتيل

    So he spends the night reckoning fate

    And soothing himself about the slain

  16. ويظل تطر به الحدا

    ة بذكرة شامة أو طفيل

    And the incidents continue to shake him

    With memories of beauty and affliction

  17. وإذا شكى حر الربا

    وصفت له ظل النخيل

    And if he complains of the heat of ashes

    I describe to him the shade of the palm trees

  18. فتكاد من شوق تطير له

    الركائب بالحمول

    Until from longing he almost takes flight

    The mounts with their burdens

  19. بالله ألا ما حملت

    رسالتي نحو الرسول

    By Allah! Bear my message

    To the Messenger

  20. وإذا وصلت إلى العقيق

    وفزت فيه بكل سول

    And when you reach al-‘Aqiq

    And prevail over it with ease

  21. ورمقت أقمار الدجى

    بسناه آمنة الأفول

    And glimpse in the darkness the moons

    Safe from setting

  22. ووقفت من باب السلا

    م بذلك الظل الظليل

    And stand at the Gate of Peace

    In that gentle shade

  23. ونظرت ما بين الستو

    ر إلى معارج جبرئيل

    And look from the stars

    To the Ascents of Gabriel

  24. فالتم ثراه وحل عن

    شوقي عرا العبئ الثقيل

    Unload your saddlebags and relieve

    The heavy burden of my longing

  25. واكتب رسالة لوعتي

    في الترب بالدمع الهمول

    And write a letter about my passion

    In the sand with pouring tears

  26. فالدمع أفصح منطقاً

    فيه من الفظ المقول

    For tears speak more eloquently

    Than words can tell

  27. وقل السلام عليك يا

    خير الورى من كل جيل

    And say, “Peace be upon you,

    O best of creation!”

  28. يا خير من نسري

    إليه بكل صعب أو ذلول

    O best of those whose sandals I make my goal

    O you through whom all that is difficult becomes smooth

  29. يامن له الجاه العريض

    يعد لليوم الطويل

    O you whose abundant grace

    Will suffice until the Final Day

  30. يا صاحب الحوض الذي

    يروي الظماء من الغليل

    O savior of the disobedient one from

    That momentous, awful calamity

  31. يا منقذ العاصي غدا

    من ذلك الكرب المهول

    O Allah’s blessing upon both his parents

    Adam and Abraham the Friend

  32. يا نعمة الباري على

    أبويه آدم والخليل

    O mercy that spread over the realms

    From a mighty King

  33. يا رحمة نشرت على ال

    كوان من ملك جليل

    You slept in the Farthest Mosque, the peak

    Of glorious origin

  34. أنمت المبوأ في المفا

    خر ذروة الشرف الأصيل

    So that jinn and mankind through you

    Became equal in submission

  35. فالجن مثل الأنس فيه

    غدوا سواء في النكول

    You summoned the trees and they prostrated

    Without delay

  36. ودعوت بالشجار فاب

    تدرت وعدن بلا ذيول

    You restored the sight of Qatadah

    Keener than kohl

  37. وأعدت عين قتادة

    كأحذ ناظرة كحيل

    And the staff of ‘Akashah you made

    A sword without flaw

  38. وأعدت عود عكاشة

    سيفاً تنزه عن بلول

    And likewise the moan of the palm trunk

    Became soft wool

  39. وكذا حنين الجذع كالام

    المرزأت النول

    When you left it, it swayed in sorrow

    And cried out in lament

  40. فارقته فاهتاج من

    أسف وأعلن بالعويل

    What an exalted rank by which you surpassed

    Those of profound understanding, confounded!

  41. هي رتبة فاق الجما

    د بها ذوي اللب الذهول

    Strange that inanimate things praised

    While rational minds were silent!

  42. عجباً لتسبيح الجما

    د وصمت ذي الراي الأصيل

    And water from your pool overflowed

    Cascading like downpour

  43. والماء من يمناك فا

    ض كسيل سارية هطول

    While the army then had no water

    To quench their burning thirst

  44. والجيش حينئذ بلا

    ماء يبل صدا الغليل

    So they satisfied themselves and completed

    Ritual purity to the ankles

  45. فروو به واستكملوا

    غرر الوضوء إلى المحجول

    And likewise you satisfied two hundred

    From one emaciated ewe

  46. وكذاك أشبعت المئين

    يداك من شاة هزيل

    O Seal of the Messengers, noble and

    Source of abundant grace

  47. يا خاتم الرسل الكرا

    م ومبدأ الفضل الجزيل

    What can I say in praise even if

    Serpents became eloquent?

  48. ماذا به أثنى ولو

    اضحى الحيا فيه رسلي

    Is there a way for me unto that proximity

    And its Dweller to be my companion?

  49. هل لي إلى ذاك الجنا

    ب وساكنه من سبيل

    That I may roam its hills freely

    And find solace for my longing

  50. لتسير بي نجب الغرا

    م ويفتدى شوقي زميل

    For I have been overlong, gaining nothing

    From time so slow to pass

  51. فلقد أطلت وما أفا

    د تقاضي الزمن المطول

    Time is gone and too narrow

    To attain my hopes and desires

  52. ضاع الزمان وضاق عن

    إدراك مأمولي وسولي

    The journey of life has ended

    And the next has drawn near, so say:

  53. هي سفرة العمر انتهت

    ودنى إلى الأخرى فقولي

    “O Lord, make his love my provision

    To the Abode of Eternity.”

  54. يا رب فاجعل حبه

    زادي إلى دار الحلول

    For by his rank I have sworn an oath

    Out of my fond notion

  55. فلقد عقدت بجاهه ال

    أهداب من ظني الجميلي

    And hoped for his intercession

    When my works fail me

  56. ورجوت منه شفاعة

    إذ خانني عملي تفي لي

    May Allah shower him with blessings

    As long as branches grow from roots!

  57. صلى عليه الله ما

    نشت الفروع عن الأصول

    Convey my secret unto the One called

    Upon in hardship and ease!

  58. وسري إليه الراكب يجتاب

    الحزون مع السهول

  59. ووشى بأسرار الريا

    ض إلى الربا نفس القبول
