1. مات الكمال فقالوا

    ولى الحجا والجلال

    Perfection died, and they said:

    Reason and majesty have departed.

  2. فللعيون بكاءٌ

    وللدموع انهمال

    So the eyes must weep,

    and tears must stream.

  3. وفي فؤاديَ حزن

    ولوعة لا تزال

    Within my heart is grief,

    and an anguish that will not cease.

  4. لله علم وحلم

    وارته تلك الرمال

    What learning and forbearance—

    those sands have buried with him!

  5. بكى الرشاد عليه

    دماً وسرّ الضلالُ

    Right guidance wept for him

    blood, while error rejoiced.

  6. قد لاح في الخير نقص

    لما مضى واختلال

    A loss appeared in goodness,

    and disorder, when he passed away.

  7. وكيف لم تر نقصا

    وقد تولّى الكمالُ

    How could you fail to see a loss,

    when Perfection itself has gone?

  8. علومه راسخاتٌ

    تزولُ منها الجبال

    His branches of learning are firmly rooted;

    before them, mountains give way.

  9. بقيره العلم ثاوٍ

    والفضل والأفضال

    In his grave, knowledge lies entombed,

    with virtue and beneficence.

  10. فلا تزال عليه

    تهمى السحابُ الثقال

    May there never cease, over him,

    the downpour of heavy clouds.
