1. وما بيضاء حمراء الإهاب

    منقبة تزور بلا نقابِ

    Neither white nor red is the complexion

    Of this veiled girl who visits unveiled

  2. معراة تعوض جسمها من

    ثياب الشرب أثواب الشرابِ

    Bare she compensates for her body with

    Clothes of drinking, clothes of wine

  3. مهفهفة لها خضر رقيق

    تتيه به على الخود الكعابِ

    Rustling, she has tender green

    She wanders with it on her blushing cheek

  4. تزان بأعين نجل وتجلى

    بحسن أنامل لدن رطابِ

    She sways with languid eyes and shines

    With the beauty of soft, delicate fingers

  5. عجبت لها تنعم في شقاء

    من الدنيا وتعذب في عذابِ

    I wondered that she enjoys in misery

    Of this life and suffers in torment

  6. لها خدر تصان به منيع

    مهابٌ عند ذي البطش المهابِ

    She has an intoxicant with which she is protected

    Impenetrable at the mighty's violence

  7. إذا اشتقنا إليها ذات يوم

    قليناها وذاك من العجابِ

    If we long for her one day

    We say to her, that is of wonders

  8. فتسمع من غناها كل صوت

    يداوي كل ذي قلب مصابِ

    So you hear from her singing every voice

    That heals each heart wounded

  9. إذا ما أنعشت بالوصل شيخا

    ترد إليه أيام الشبابِ

    If she revived an old man with union

    She restores to him the days of youth

  10. ومع ذا بيننا كانت حروب

    ولم يك لي حسامٌ غيرُ نابِ

    And with that between us were wars

    And I had no sword but my tusks
