والنوفرُ قَدْ شَكَا إلَى الغدرَانِ
شكوى الغَرَقِ
And al-Nawfali complained to the pools—
a drowning man’s complaint;
والنرجسُ بَاتَ سَاهرَ الأجْفَانِ
سَاهِي الحَدَقِ
and the narcissus spent the night with sleepless lids,
its pupils wandering in a daze.
