أضلّني الغيى عن سبل الهدايات
لما امتطيت مطيات الضلالات
Astray I was led by ignorance from the paths of guidance
When I mounted the steeds of misguidance
ولو منحت من التوفيق موهبة
أزاحني الرشد عن طريق الغوايات
Had I been granted the gift of success
Right conduct would have steered me from the ways of ruin
أنا المفرط في حب الإله فيا
خسراي قد أصد التفريط مرآتي
I am the one excessive in my love of God
Woe to me! My excess led to my destruction
أنا المسىء أنا الغر الكذوب أنا
الخب الخؤون أنا ركن الإساءات
I am the evildoer, the naive liar, I am
The essence of villainy, the pillar of sin
ما حيلتي ما اعتذاري إن سئلت
وقد أوقرت ظهري بأوزار وزلات
What can I offer in excuse when asked
When my back is burdened with the loads of lapses?
وكيف لي باعتذار لا تقوم به
لي حجة عند توجيه المحاجات
What plea can I make that will stand
When arguments are made against me?
يا قلب حتى متى لا تنتمي أبدا
عن التقلب في مهد الإرادات
Oh heart! How long will you not devote
Yourself, and turn on the cradle of will?
يا نطق حتى متى لا ترعوي أبدا
عن بث ما ليس يغني من مقالات
Oh tongue! How long will you not guard
Against uttering that which is futile?
يا لحظ حتى متى لا تنثني أبدا
عن لحظ ما ليس يجدي من خيالات
Oh eye! How long will you not refrain
From sights that are worthless visions?
يا سمع حتى متى لا تتئد أبدا
عن سمع ما ليس يغنى من مناجات
Oh ear! How long will you not block
Hearing that which is fruitless talk?
يا نفس حتى متى لا تكتفي أو ما
علمت أن غدا يوم المجازات
Oh self! How long, and do you not know
That tomorrow is the day of reckoning?
يا أرحم الراحمين العفو عن وجل
لم ينهه العلم عن خوض الجهالات
Oh Most Merciful, forgive the terrified
Whose knowledge did not bar him from ignorance
يا أرحم الراحمين العفو عن دنف
لم يشفه الطب من داء الدنيات
Oh Most Merciful, pardon the abject
Whose medicine did not cure his worldly ills
يا أرحم الراحمين العفو عن غرق
لم ينجه العوم من بحر الإضاعات
Oh Most Merciful, rescue the drowning
Whom swimming did not save from the sea of loss
أطاع داعي التصابي والهوى أسفا
وكيف ينجو مطيع للصبابات
He obeyed the call of discord and desire, alas
How can one who obeys temptation be saved?
وخاضّ في الخطايا والذنوب وهل
ينجو المجلجل في بحر الخطيئات
He wallowed in sins and wrongs, and who
Is saved when floundering in the sea of sin?
يا ويحه من مسىء مدنف قبحت
حالاته فتراها شرّ حالات
Oh woe to an evildoer, abhorred are his states
You see him in the worst of states
لا يرتجى أحدا إلاك يرحمه
فارحمه يا فاطر السبع السموات
None but You can have mercy on him
So have mercy on him, O Originator of the seven heavens
يا رحمة الله صوبا منك يمطرني
فضلا فقد أمحل العصبان ساحاتي
O God's Mercy, send down on me bounty
For my domains have been seized by drought
يا رحمة الله جودا منك يجبرني
منا فقد ضيع الحرمان أوقاتي
O God's Mercy, send down on me favor
For deprivation has wasted my time
يا رحمة الله سترا منك يشملني
عفوا فقد أظهر العدوان سوءاتي
O God's Mercy, send down on me veiling
Forgiveness, for hostility has exposed my wrongs
أعوام لهو كايام قد انقرضت
بأشهر قضيت زهوا كساعات
Years of vanity passed like days gone by
In months I spent my youth like hours
أل أندب ما أفنته من عمري
بأدمع اشعلت نيران لوعاتي
Should I not lament what I wasted of my life
With tears that ignited the fires of anguish?
لعل تنفح للغفران نافحة
فيذهب الحزن إقبال المسرات
Perhaps a gentle breeze of forgiveness may blow
Dispelling sorrow, heralding joy
وكيف لا أرتجي عفو الإله وقد
أبديت عذري لعلام الخفيّات
How can I not hope for God's pardon when
I have given my excuse to the Knower of secrets?
وجئت مستشفعا مما جنيت بمن
نال الشفاعة في أهل الجنايات
And I have come seeking intercession for what I gained
From the one granted intercession amongst sinners

Muhammad the Chosen One, the Guide, the Messenger
To all people with clear, shining verses
الحاشر العاقب المختار من شهدت
بما آدعاه براهين الأدلات الفاتح
The Final One, the Particular, the Chosen
Whose claim was proven by arguments and proofs
الخاتم الماحي الذي افتتحت
به النبوءة ختام الرسالات
The Opener, the Seal, the Ob literator
With whom prophecy was concluded with messages
ماضي العزائم أخاذ الغنائم
غفار الجرائم كشاف البليات
Firm of purpose, seizer of booty
Forgiver of sins, discloser of tribulations
ضخم الرسيغة جرار الكنيبة
ميمون النقية وهاب الجزيلات
Of mighty lineage, uprooter of enmity
Auspicious, bestower of abundance
مبدي العجائب منصور الكتائب
محمود المناقب وضاح الهديات
Revealer of wonders, victorious over regiments
Praised, elucidator of guidance
كنز اللوامع برهان الطوالع مفتاح
المطالع مصباح المقامات
Treasure of beacons, proof for times to come
Key to horizons, lamp of stations
ذو المعجزات التي ما نالها أحد
أعظم بها من جليات جليلات
Possessor of miracles none before obtained
Mightiest in clear, magnificent signs
من شق غيوان كسرى عند مولده
وانقضت الشهب من أفق السموات
When he was born the stars fell from the sky
And the fires of Persia were extinguished
ونار فارس أطفا جمرها وبه
غاضت بحيرة ساوى بعد فيضات
The mute beasts spoke in clear words
Proclaiming his truth with eloquent expressions
وخاطبت الوحوش العجم مفصحة
عن صدقه بعبارات مبينات
The small provision satisfied the army
Despite their great numbers, they feared no hunger
وأشبع الجيش بالزاد القليل فلم
يخشوا لكثرتهم ضر المجاعات
From his fingers poured clear water, scarce
Would be the Nile in times of flooding
ومن اصابعه فاض الزلال فقل
يا حبذا النيل في وقت الزيادات
The noblest if the messengers came before
And greatest if miracles are considered
أوفى النبيل ان عدو السابقة
وأعظم الرسل إن عادوا الآيات
In him combined all aspects of perfection
As in him united attributes of glory
تجمعت فيه أقسام الكمال كما
تقسّمت فيه أوصاف الجلالات
If the sea obtained a part of his virtues
It would not harm the deepest souls
لو كان للبحر جزء من مواهبه
ما ضر بالدرر القر النفسيات
If the sun borrowed one of his beauties
The horizon would not darken with gloom
ولو كسا الشمس وصفا من محاسنه
ما جهم الأفق زنجي الدجنات
Purifier of hearts, elucidator of authority, moon
Exonerating speech, fragrant greetings
مطهّر القلب وضاح السنا قمر
مبرأ القول معطار التحيات
Adorned in the raiment of victory, assuming
The Spirit and Self with Mightiest Honor
موشّح برداء النصر متخذ
بعزة الأكرمين الروح والذات
He continues to strive as mountains yield to him
Against enemies with secrets of the unseen
ما زال يجهد والجبال يظهره
على العداة باسرار خفيات
Until the egg of Islam was protected in its nest
By his piercing, resolute lances
حتى حمت بيضة الإسلام سطوته
في عشّها بالرماح السمهريات
The light of the day of religion shone bright
The sun of guidance emerged, and the night of misguidance faded
ولاح ضوء نهار الدين واتضحت
شمس الهدى واختفى ليل الضلالات
Amongst the multitude who reaped the harvest of error
With the blades of their glances and piercing white swords
في معشر حصدوا زرع الغواية من
رأس الجحود ببيض مشوفيات
Clad in the armor of resolution on a day when
The arenas of religion awoke from slumber of raids
من كل ممتطىء للنهد مدرع
لا ينسه لمسه ظفر العمرات
And wearing the garb of humiliation, each one
Thrown down by the foes with sharp swords
ألصائنين بسمر الخط يوم وعى
مسارح الدين من شعواء غارات
Achieving glory and high rank with their resolve
And noble lineage of lofty, refined ancestry
والملبسين ثياب الذل كل كم
من العداة بأسياف عربات
Inscribing with lance-pens lines of courage
When arms wrote down the prose of calamity
والحايزين بأحساب وبيض ظبا
بحبوحة المجد والشم الرفيعات
Without complaining or being complained against, in war
Made them drink from cups of annihilation
والمعجمين حروف الجسم إذ كتبت
أقلام أرماحهم سطر الرزبات
Their lightning in battle did not thunder in the sky
Except to revive and dress wounds
ولا تشكّى ولا نشكى العدا في الحرب من
ظمإ غلا سقوهم بكاسات المنيات
With him they were the best of mankind
And were characterized, when tried, with noble lineages
ما أرعدت في سما الهيجا بوارقهم
إلا همى وبل وطفاء الجراحات سادوا
The exalted, proud ancestry of princes
The clear text of the book, they are the noblest masters
بصحبه خيرا الخلق واتصفوا
عند الفخار بأنساب عريقات
Radiant lights, saturating lights
Floods of bounty, shining moons
السادة الغرّ من أنبا بسؤددهم
نص الكتاب فهم أشرف سادات
Standing lions, lions in battlefields
Massive mountains, lions of the jungle
أنوار داجية أنوار مسبغة
أغمار أعطية أقمار هالات
As if for the glory they built a lofty house
The Prophet's light, therein a lantern niche
أنجاد أندية أنجاد معركة
أطواد معلوة آساد غابات
He is the Beloved whose sole purpose
Was important affairs from all people
كأنهم لكمال المجد بيت علا
نور النبي به مصباح مشكاة
He is the Noble mentioned on the Day
Of Judgment, for tremendous sins
فهو الحبيب الذي وحدت مقصده
عن الأنام لأحوال مهمات
I strive to attain his favour hoping
To achieve what I wish of sweet gifts
وهو الكريم الذي أعددت مدحته
يوم المعاد لآثام عظيمات
So I may attain through praising him favour
Whose attainment requires the sea of nobility
اسعى على جوده سعيا يبشرني
بنيل ما أرتجيه من لبانات
O people of the Messenger convey what I direct
To the Intercessor hoped for calamities
فتنتهي بي إلى افضاله مدح
تستلزم النيل من بحر الكرامات
And inform mankind that I am a guest who
Fears no distress in erasure or record
يا هل رسول يؤدي ما أوجّهه
إلى الشفيع المرجى للملمات
Encircled with gifts, loudly singing praise
Forgetting doves in lyrical cooing
ويبلغ الخلق أني ضيف أنعمه
لا أختشي الضنك في محو وإثبات
I have composed this ode of praise hoping
To attain success and escape misfortunes
مطوق بهبات صادح بثنى
ينسى الحمائم في سجع ورنات
So I win a sublime prize though I am
A fearful sinner hoping for your noble hands
أحبر المدح في خيز الكرام عسى
ألقى به الفوز من هول المصيبات
How can I not hope for such triumph when
My sincerity in praising him is a secret of love?
فأنعم بجائزة لابن الخلوف فقد
وافى يرجي أياديك الكريمات
In my dream, he appeared with every
Attribute of perfection and signal of beauty
وكيف لا أرتجي الفوز العظيم ولي
في مدحه سر إخلاص المحبات وقد
He stretched out his hands to me, then welcomed me
Good tidings emanating from him, promising bliss
تراءى لعيني في المنم على
أتم اوصاف حالات الكمالات
O Most Generous of Messengers in lineage and kingdom
And most noble of mankind, past and future
ومد كفيه نحوي ثم رحب بي
والبشر منه ضمين بالسعادات
I praised you hoping to free myself
From associating partners with God, my sins, and lapses
يا أكرم الرسل من أنس ومن ملك
واشرف الخلق من ماض ومن آت
I did not praise you with my verses
But praised your sublime qualities through verses
إني مدحتك كي أرجو التخلص من
إشراك ديني وآثامي وزلّاتي
Intercede with your favour for his wrongs, and who
Hopes for intercession but for crimes?
ما إن مدحت بأبياتي علاك
ولكني امتدحت بعلياكم أبيات
O Lord, be generous to Uthman, my master
And protect him from the evils of afflictions
واشفع بفضلك فيما قد جناه وهل
ترجى الشفاعة إلا للجنايات
Aid him with a clear, manifest victory
And be his aid in dire, weighty affairs
يا رب واكلا بجاه المصطفى كرما
مولاي عثمان من شر البليات
Protect him from the deceit of aggressors and enviers
As you have protected the people of Your care
واعضده بالنصر والفتح المبين
وكن عونا له في الملمات المهمات
Forgive him, pardon him, and grant him favour
By which eternity in the abode of nobility is attained
واحفظه من كيد ذي بغي وذي
حسد بما حفظت به أهل العنايات
Guard for him the abode of Islam, and protect with him
The fortresses of the kingdom from evils of harm
واغفر له واعف عنه وأته منحا
تنيبه الخلد في دار الكرامات
So religion attains honour and tranquility
And disbelief falls into humiliation and confusion
واحرس له حوزة الإسلام واحم به
معاقل الملك من أهوال آفات
Protect the sanctuary of your fortunate deputies
And oversee the stewardship, O Master of fortune
ليصبح الدين في عز وفي دعة
ويغتدي الشرك في ذل وحيرات
Gaze upon him with an eye of affection and generosity
And grant him your munificence, O Giver of gifts
وصن حمى مالكي المسعود وارع له
ولاية العهد يا مولى السعادات
Sanctify him with Your purest eternal prayer
The best of men, hoped for in intercession
وانظر إليه بعين العطف تكرمة
وامنحه جدواك يا معطي العطيات
The hand of youth has not brandished a spear
And the charming have not bent the boughs of sprouts
واخصص بأزكى صلاة منك دائمة
خير الأنام المرجى للشفاعات
Nor have the gazelles of dawn grazed
In the crescents of homesteads
ما هزّ كفّ الصبا عطف القضيب وما
عنّى الهزار على أغصان بانات
وآله الغر والأصحاب ما رتعت
غزالة الصبح في أدواح دارات
