ولمّا أَردت طروقَ الفتاةِ

وصاحبني صاحبٌ لا يغارُ

When I wanted to visit the young woman

And a friend who does not get jealous accompanied me

صموتُ اللسان بعيد السّماعِ

فسرِّيَ مُكتَتَمٌ والجهارُ

My tongue fell silent, beyond hearing

So I kept my secret and spoke openly

وَضاق العناقُ فصار الرّداء

لها ملبساً ولباسي الخمارُ

The embrace grew tight, so her cloak

Became her dress while my dress was my turban

وَما لفّنا كاِلتفافِ الغصونِ

جَميعاً هنالك إلّا الإزارُ

And we didn't wrap around each other

Like tree branches entwining, except for our loincloths

وطاب لنا بعد طولِ البعادِ

رُواء الحديث وذاك الجِوارُ

Conversation was sweet after long separation

And that nearness

شَربتُ بريقَتها خَمرةً

ولكنّها خمرةٌ لا تُدارُ

I drank the sparkle of her eyes intoxicated

But it’s an intoxication without aftereffects

كأنّ الظّلامَ بإشراق ما

أنالَتْ وأعطته منها نهارُ

As if the darkness with the radiance of her face

Obtained from it and gave to it daylight

وَأَثّر في جيدِها ساعدي

وأثّر في جانبيَّ السِّوارُ

And my arm left a trace on her cheek

And her bracelet left a trace on my side

فَلو صُبَّتِ الكأس ما بَيننا

لما خرجت من يدينا العُقارُ

If a cup was poured between us

Neither of our hands would retain any sediment

وناب منابَ ليالٍ طوالٍ

تقصّر هذي الليالي القصارُ

The long nights have passed fleetingly

While these short nights drag on
