1. Peace—but can a greeting of peace avail the one who

    has passed from me, perished, as Death saw fit?

  2. I filled the earth’s belly with him—and truly,

    it pains my heart that I filled the damp soil with him.

  3. With no choice of mine, I peopled the winding sands with him,

    and gave a fold of the shroud dominion over his limbs.

  4. Then take my heart’s secret—both your palms full of heartache;

    and take my eye’s lid—both your palms full of smarting grit.

  5. Then go—not because you had grown tiresome; how many a one has gone

    under a sorrow that strikes deep, not from weariness or hate.

  6. I say, now that patient endurance lies beyond me: Is this how—

    the Sovereign of the earth willed it, or is this how He decreed?
