1. قل لعينيَّ لا تَمَلّا الدّموعا

    تارةً أدمعاً وأخرى نجيعا

    Tell my eyes, do not brim with tears

    Sometimes tearful, other times wailing

  2. ودعا الفكرَ في الهجوع فيأبى

    لكما الرُّزءُ أنْ تذوقا الهجوعا

    Leave thinking in grief though it refuses

    How much grief can you both taste

  3. إنّ هذا الخطبَ الفظيعَ وما شا

    هَدتُما من سواه خطباً فظيعا

    This terrible affliction, nothing else

    You have seen is as terrible as it

  4. أيّها الآملُ الحياةَ وما يخ

    شى غروباً كما يرجّي طلوعا

    O hopeful of life, fearing

    Sunset as you hope for sunrise

  5. والّذي يرفع القصورَ كأنّ الد

    دهر أعفى بناءَه المرفوعا

    He who raises palaces as if

    Time has spared its tall buildings

  6. قد رأينا كما رأيتَ عليّاً

    في الثُّريّا حلّ الترابَ صريعا

    We saw as you saw Ali

    Wrapped in dust, a lifeless corpse

  7. لا تخفْ إنْ حَييتَ غيرَ المنايا

    وَإذا ما علوتَ إلّا الوُقوعا

    Fear not if you live unlike death

    And if you rise, only to fall

  8. وإلى كم تكون في هذه الدُّن

    يا أسيراً معلَّلاً مخدوعا

    For how long will you be in life

    Ill-fated and tricked, a captive?

  9. هل ترى إنْ رأيتَ إِلّا خِداعاً

    وسراباً في كلِّ قاعٍ لموعا

    Do you see, if you see, other than guile

    And mirage in every barren valley?

  10. ولباساً متى تشاء الليالي

    كان عنّا محوَّلا منزوعا

    And a garment, whenever nights wish

    Was from us, changed and removed

  11. لا تكنْ في البقاءِ والدّهرُ يُفني

    ك صباحاً وفي المساءِ طَموعا

    Be not in remaining when time destroys you

    Like morning, and in evening twilight

  12. لم تدعْ حادثاتُ هذِي اللّيالي

    عندنا تابعاً ولا متبوعا

    The events of these nights left

    No followers or followed among us

  13. ولو اِنّي أنصفتُ نفسي لصيّرْ

    تُ سلامي على الورى توديعا

    If I were fair to myself, I would make

    My farewells to people departure

  14. يا خليليَّ غنّياني بتذكي

    ري الرزايا وسقّياني الدّموعا

    My friend, remind me of misfortunes

    And let me drink tears

  15. واِسمعا مثلما سمعتُ من الأي

    يامِ هذا التّخويفَ والتّرْويعا

    And listen as I listened to days

    Threatening and frightening me

  16. وإذا لم تدعْ صروفُ اللّيالي

    لي أُصولاً فكيف أرجو فروعا

    If the nights' turns left me no

    Roots, how can I hope for branches?

  17. أين قومٌ كانوا على الليل صُبحاً

    لا يُوارى وفي الجدوبِ ربيعا

    Where are the people who were at night a morn

    Whose glow was never veiled, and in droughts, spring?

  18. أين من كان للرّدى طارداً بال

    بأسِ عنّا وبالنّدى ينبوعا

    Where are those who drove away evil

    From us with might, and with dew were fountains?

  19. فَتراهمْ من بعدِ عزٍّ عزيزٍ

    في بطون الثّرى جُثوماً خُشوعا

    You see them, after dear mighty power

    In the earth's laps, humbled, submitted

  20. ليتَ دهراً أعطى وعاد إِلينا

    مُسترِدّاً لذاك كان منوعا

    I wish fate restored and gave back

    That which it deprived, to us

  21. وإذا لم يكنْ سوى الموت فالما

    ضي بطيئاً كمن يموت سريعا

    If nothing remains but death, then slow

    Death is like sudden death

  22. قل لناعي أبي عليٍّ ألا لي

    تَ الّذي قلت لَم يَكن مَسموعا

    Tell my father Ali's mourner: Do not

    Say what you said was never heard

  23. إِنّ رَوْعاً ألقيتَ في الرُّوعِ مِنِّي

    يوم خبّرتَ لم يدعْ لِيَ رُوعا

    You have cast terror in me

    When you told what left me no tranquility

  24. سلِّ غيري فليس كلُّ جَزوعٍ

    عضّه الرُّزءُ كان مثلي جَزوعا

    Question another, not all bereaved are

    Afflicted by woe like me, bereaved

  25. لم أكنْ قانعاً بشيءٍ من الدّه

    ر وعُلِّقْتُهُ فصرتُ قَنوعا

    I was content with nothing in life

    I hung it up and so became content

  26. كانَ تِرْبِي وَصاحِبي وإِذا ما

    خِفتُ حصناً من الخطوب منيعا

    He was my soil, my companion, and whenever

    I feared, an impregnable fortress

  27. وَلَهُ الذّكرُ خالداً كلّما أُخْ

    لِقَ ذكرٌ سواه عاد نَصوعا

    His memory is eternal - whenever another

    Is remembered, it returns blunted

  28. وَحَياتي مثلُ المماتِ إِذا فا

    رَقْتُ من كان لِي جَناباً مَريعا

    Without him I love, my life resembles death

    When we were separated, a part of me torn

  29. أيُّ مَلْكٍ في عصرنا لم يكن لم

    ما دَهاك الرّدى بك المفجوعا

    What king in our time was not

    Struck down by fate - it made you desolate

  30. أنتَ أوسعتَهمْ وقد أعْضَلَ الخَطْ

    بُ مقالاً كفاهُمُ وصنيعا

    You aided them, and calamity uttered

    Words enough for them and deed enough

  31. كم أصاخوا إليك والرأيُ شورى

    وأجابوا نداءَك المسموعا

    How they screamed to you, judgment is consultation

    They answered your call heard

  32. ما أبالي إذا حفظتُ عهوداً

    لصديقي مَنْ كان غيري مُضيعا

    I do not care if I keep a

    Promise to my friend, though none other does

  33. قد عَمِرْنا كما نشاءُ اِشتراكاً

    وَاِشتِباكاً وَصَبوةً ونزوعا

    We have lived, sharing

    And mingling, gathering and dispersing

  34. وَاِمتَزَجنا حتَّى جَعلتك لمّا

    غِبتَ عن مقلتِي لجدِّي ضجيعا

    Until I made you, when you were

    Absent from my eyelids, my companion in sleep

  35. في مكانٍ تأتي ملائكةُ الل

    هِ إِليه عشيّةً وهزيعا

    In a place angels of God

    Come to, evening and morn

  36. وإذا ما دعوتَ ربَّك فيه

    وسألتَ العظيمَ كان سميعا

    If you call your Lord there

    And ask the Almighty, He hears

  37. وجوارٍ لمن إذا كنتَ موقو

    ذاً من السّيّئاتِ كان شفيعا

    And a neighbor - when you stand

    Cleansed of evil deeds - who intercedes

  38. فهنيئاً بأنْ سكنتَ رباعاً

    كنّ للغُرِّ آل موسى ربوعا

    So congratulations, you settled quarters

    We passed on to Moses' folk abodes

  39. وإِذا لم يكن لهمْ يومَ حشرٍ

    روعةٌ تُتقى فلستَ مَروعا

    If they have no fears the Day they are

    Resurrected, you will not be fearful

  40. وإذا ما شفاهُهُمْ كرِعَت ثم

    مَ زُلالاً أصبحتَ فيه كَروعا

    When their lips are parched, then you will be

    In it, sated with water pure and plentiful -

  41. وَسقى اللَّهُ تُربةً أنتَ فيها

    زَجِلاً بالزّلال كان هَموعا

    God watered soil you are laid to rest in, saturated

    With pure drink was once burning thirst
