1. إنّ على رَمْلِ العقيق خِيَما

    زوّدني مَنْ حلّهنَّ السَّقَما

    On the sand dunes of al-‘Aqīq is a tent

    Stocked by one who cured all sickness

  2. بِنّا فما نأمل من لقائِنا

    ذاتَ الثّنايا الغُرِّ إلّا الحُلُما

    We do not hope to meet again

    Except in dreams of cheeks so soft

  3. أَهوى وإِن كان لنا تعلَّةً

    طيفاً يوافي منكم مسلِّما

    I love and though we have some fault

    A specter comes to me, a faithful envoy

  4. يبذل لِي من بعد أن ضَنَّ به

    وشافعي النومُ العِذارَ والفما

    Who after being stingy gives generously

    And my drowsy self makes excuses and persuades

  5. وجاد حِلّاً والدُّجى شعارُنا

    بنائلٍ لو كان صبحاً حَرَما

    Dawn broke and darkness was our code

    With fresh dates had it been morn they’d be forbidden

  6. حُبَّ بها إِلْمَامةً مأمونةً

    وزَوْرَةً يُزيحُ فيها التُّهما

    I found in her a safe loved one

    And a visit that removes all worries

  7. وجَدْتُ فيها كلّما أحببتُه

    لكنَّ وجداناً يضاهي العَدَما

    Whenever I loved her I found

    A presence akin to nonexistence

  8. ما علمتْ نفسي بماذا حُبِيَتْ

    ولا الّذي جاد عليها عَلِما

    My soul knows not why it was loved

    Nor who was so generous to it

  9. عجبتِ يا ظَمْياءُ من شيبٍ غدا

    مُنتَشِراً في مَفْرَقي مبتسما

    I wondered, O reddish dark one, at hair

    Spreading through my temples with a smile

  10. لو كان لي حكمٌ يُطاعُ أمرُهُ

    حميتُ منه لمّتي واللِّمَما

    If I had an order obeyed

    I’d protect my hair and head from turning white

  11. تَهوَيْنَ عن بيضٍ برأسي سُودَه

    وعن صباحٍ في العِذارِ الظّلَما

    You are unfair to the whiteness on my head

    And to the dawn in the dark tresses

  12. قَليْتِ ظلماً كالثَّغامِ لونُهُ

    ولونُ ما تبغين يحكي الفحما

    You called it an injustice—its color

    Like embers, though the color you want tells of coal

  13. صِبغُ الدّجى أبعدُ عن فاحشةٍ

    ولم يزلْ صبغُ الدُّجى متّهما

    The dye of darkness is far from ugly

    Yet the dye of darkness remains accused

  14. مَنْ عاش لم تجنِ عليه نُوَبٌ

    شابتْ نواحي رأسه أم هرما

    One who lives is not marred by time

    His temples turned white or he grew old

  15. أَما تَرى صاحِ اِلتِماعَ بارقٍ

    طالعني وميضُهُ من الحِمى

    Don’t you see the flashing lightning

    Its gleam comes to me from fever

  16. مُعَصْفَرَ الأرْفاغِ مَوْشِيَّ المَطا

    مضرَّجاً إمّا دماً أو عَنْدَما

    Jaundiced eyelids, walking proudly

    Covered in either blood or red dye

  17. لَولا اِختِلاسي في الدّجى لوَمْضِهِ

    رأيت منه في صُحارٍ إِضَما

    If not for my disappearance in the dark its flash

    Would show a shameful state

  18. لم أدرِ ما جَدواهُ إلّا أنّه

    أذكرني إلمامُهُ ذاتَ اللَّمى

    I know not what its use is but

    Its bridle reminds me of one who owned the banner

  19. عجبتُ من سهمٍ له أقْصَدَني

    ولم يَسِلْ لي مقتلٌ منه دما

    I wondered at an arrow that aimed for me

    Yet no blood was shed for me by it

  20. وَعاج مَن أودى الهَوى فؤادَه

    بحبّها يعجب ممّن سَلِما

    And I'm amazed at one whom love destroyed

    His heart, surprising one who was saved

  21. قلْ لبني الحارث خلّوا نَعَمي

    فلستُمُ ممّنْ يَشُلّ النّعَما

    Tell the clan of Harith to leave my grace be

    You are not ones who share grace

  22. يشلّها كلُّ غلامٍ مُنْتَمٍ

    يوم الوغى إلى القنا إنِ اِنتمى

    Grace is shared by every cross lad

    Bold on a day of fighting if he but believed

  23. تراه إنْ خِيف الرّدى ضلالةً

    صَبّاً بأسبابِ الرّدى متيّما

    You see him if ruin was feared, wandering

    Pouring the causes of ruin, with collar charms

  24. كتمتُمُ البغضاءَ دهراً بيننا

    فالآن قد شاع الّذي تكتّما

    You hid your hatred of us for years

    But now what you concealed spreads

  25. وخلتمونا شحمةً منبوذَةً

    يأخذها مَن شاءَها ملتقما

    You left us like discarded fat

    That anyone who wanted could pick at

  26. لو كنتُمُ باعدتُمُ شِرارَكمْ

    عن يابس العَرْفَجِ ما تضرّما

    Had you kept your riffraff away

    From withered grounds they wouldn’t have caught fire

  27. وطالما كنّا وأنتُمْ نُكَّصٌ

    نَجْبَهُ إِمّا عاملاً أو لَهْذَما

    Oft were we and you but laggards

    Fleeing either slave or battered

  28. ضاغمتمونا جَهْلَةً وإنّما

    ضاغمتُمُ مَن كان منكمْ أضغما

    You blamed us ignorant when

    You blamed one who was more ignorant among you

  29. وإنّما طُلتمْ بما جُدْنا به

    ولم نَذَرْه عندنا مخيِّما

    As for what you asked for that we own

    We didn't leave it with us well-lodged

  30. فعاد ما صُلتم به وطُلْتمُ

    قد رَثَّ أو أخلَقَ أو تهدّما

    So what you connected and asked for

    Came back broken, torn down or collapsed

  31. فَما الّذي أطعمكمْ ولم تكنْ

    أهلاً لأطماعكمُ وما رَمَى

    What fed you though you did not deserve

    Ambitions, hopes, food or drink?

  32. تركتُمُ أعراضَكمْ مبذولةً

    وصُنتمُ دينارَكمْ والدِّرهما

    You left your own honor given away

    Yet protected your coins and dirham

  33. وقلتمُ إنّ النِّجارَ واحدٌ

    كم من أديمٍ فاق فضلاً أُدُما

    You said leatherwork is all the same

    While more hides surpass red hide in merit

  34. في كلّ يومٍ ليَ منكم صاحبٌ

    أضاء في وداده وأظلما

    Daily you have someone befriend me

    His affection shining then darkening

  35. أقسَمَ أنْ يَفْضُلني وطالما

    في مفخرٍ أحنثتُ منه قسما

    He'd swear always to favor me but

    Broke it, an oath I heard him give

  36. وذو اِعوجاجٍ كلّما محّصني

    صادفَ منّي صاحباً مقوِّما

    Crooked he is, whenever he flatters me

    I find a friend who makes straight

  37. فإنْ فخرتمْ بذوي تنعّمٍ

    فقومُنا لم يعرفوا التَّنَعّما

    If you take pride in prosperous peace

    Our people knew no luxury

  38. باتوا قياماً في الدّجى وبِتُّمُ

    من بعد سوْآتٍ مضين نُوَّما

    They stayed up nights in the dark, and you

    Were only fasting amid plenty's frustration

  39. ولم يكونوا في ضُحىً وأنتُمُ

    في كِظَّةِ الإكثارِ إلّا صُوَّما

    Don't feel safe from a lion in its den

    A lion can pounce if it but intended

  40. لا تَأمنوا اللّيثَ على إطْراقِهِ

    قد يعزم اللّيثُ إذا ما أرزما

    And beware a people's champion if

    He missed his chance—one who did intend

  41. وحاذروا عازمَ قومٍ آده

    فوتُ المُنى ففاعلٌ من عزما

    How long will you pain me so

    Swelling an illness that refuses swelling?

  42. إلى متى أنتَ على سَمْتِ الأذى

    تَكظِم داءً قد أبى أنْ يُكظَما

    The wishes you harbor—have you gained them

    Besides drink or food?

  43. هل نِلتَ إنْ نِلْتَ الأمانِيَّ الّتي

    تَروم إلّا مَشرباً أو مطعما

    We live in an abode of humiliation

    Given bitter drinks daily

  44. إنّا مقيمون بدار ذلّةٍ

    نُسقى بها في كلِّ يومٍ علْقما

    Good deeds go unrewarded

    And the criminal fears no crime

  45. ومُهْمَلون لا يُجازى محسنٌ

    ولا يَخاف جرمَه من أجرما

    Rise to dignity—so one who dislikes trouble

    If he won't hand out gifts finds no solace

  46. نَهْضاً إلى العزّ فمن عاف القَذى

    ولم يَهبْ وِرْدَ الحِمام أقدما

    I see the captives' backs being thrashed

    Weary of either family or tombs

  47. كأنّني بهنّ أعجاز السُّرى

    يلُكْن عن لَوْكِ العَلِيق اللُّجُما

    And atop them every dreadful lion

    When it pounces ties or increases bonds

  48. يخبطن غِبَّ الضّرب والطّعنِ وقد

    سَئِمْنَ إمّا لِمَّةً أو أعظما

    A people, if they fight or defeat

    They know no tiredness or boredom

  49. وَفَوقهنّ كلّ مرهوبِ الشّذا

    إِذا همَى اِنهلّ وإن زاد طما

    The leaders of assemblies, and lions, whenever

    Fighting with lances is most heated among them

  50. مِن مَعشرٍ إنْ حاربوا أو غالبوا

    لم يعرفوا مَلالةً أو سَأَما

    They repelled horses from their lands

    And poured gifts on cameleers

  51. أَهِلَّةُ النّادي وآسادٌ إذا

    كان القنا في الرَّوْع منهم أَجَما

    Leave the lowland trees to whoever can take them—

    Either gatherers or peacemakers

  52. هُمْ طَردوا الإِمْلاقَ عن دِيارهمْ

    وأمطروا في المُعتَفين النِّعَما

    A man—not every man—but a man

    Who reined in the passions of love or rage

  53. دَعْ شَجرَ القاعِ لمن يَخبِطُهُ

    يَخْبِطُ إمّا نَشَماً أو سَلَمَا

    Sustenance comes to you without your reaching

    Neither palms nor steps make effort

  54. فَما الفتى كلُّ الفتى إلّا اِمرُؤٌ

    زمَّ خياشِيمَ الهوى أو خطما

    Sustenance does not alight on one seeking it

    Always sheltering from abandoned camps

  55. والرّزق يأتيك ولم تبسط له

    كفّاً ولم تَسْعَ إليه قدما

    Nor does wealth settle on one who denies guests

    When will tight fists be split with something wedged?

  56. لا نزل الرّزقُ على مستمطرٍ

    لِرزقه من المخازي دِيَما

    God does not shepherd a severed bond

    Widening it after a loss with regret

  57. ولا ثوى اليُسْرُ بدارِ باخلٍ

    متى يُسَلْ بذل اليَسارِ جَمْجَما

  58. ولا رعى اللَّهُ أخا مَكْرُمَةٍ

    أوسعها من بعد فوْتٍ نَدَما
