1. إِن كانَ غيّبك الترابُ الأحمرُ

    وحَلَلْتَ مَرْتاً لا يزورك زُوَّرُ

    If the red soil has hidden you

    And you have become a visitor no visitors frequent

  2. فلقد جَزِعتُ على فراقك بعدما

    ظنّوا بأنّي عنك جهلاً أصبِرُ

    Then I grieved over parting with you, after

    They thought I was ignorant to patiently bear it

  3. فالنّارُ في جَنْبَيَّ يوقدها الأسى

    والماءُ من عينيَّ حُزناً يقطرُ

    So the fire in my sides, kindled by sorrow

    And the water from my eyes, drips with sadness

  4. كم في التّرابِ لنا محيّاً مشرقٌ

    بيد المواحِي أو جبينٌ أزهرُ

    How many bright and radiant ones in the soil

    With soft hands or shining foreheads

  5. ومرفّعٌ فوق الرّجال جلالةً

    ومتوّجٌ ومطوّقٌ ومسوّرُ

    And raised above men in majesty

    Crowned and garlanded and honoured

  6. أَعيَتْ على طلبِ الرّدى نُجُبُ السُّرى

    وخُطا المَهارى والجيادُ الضُّمَّرُ

    The stellar nobles wearied seeking glory

    And the skilled were exhausted, and the vigorous horses slowed

  7. وَمَضى الأنامُ تكنّهمْ آجالهمْ

    فمغصّصٌ ومنغّصٌ ومُحَسّرُ

    And the people passed away, their fates overtaking them

    So some smiled, some frowned, some looked miserable

  8. ومُخالَسٌ ما كان يُحذر هُلْكُه

    ومتارَكٌ ومُقدّمٌ ومؤخّرُ

    And some met what they never feared would destroy them

    While some went early and some went late

  9. وكأنّهمْ بيد الحِمامِ يلفُّهمْ

    عَصْفٌ تصفِّقُهُ خَريقٌ صَرْصَرُ

    As if a gust were wrapping them in its wings

    The whistling, chirping sparrow

  10. وَمواطنٌ لِترنّمٍ وتنعّمٍ

    ومواطنٌ فيها الزّوافر تزفِرُ

    And there are places for chanting and bliss

    And places where cold north winds howl

  11. لو كان في خُلدٍ لحيٍّ مَطمعٌ

    فيها وروّادِ المنيّةِ مَزْجَرُ

    If there was hope of undying life

    It would rescue those daring death and the grave

  12. لنجا المنونَ مغامرٌ في حومةٍ

    وخطا المنيّةَ في العرين القَسْوَرُ

    And death's paths would be barred from its doors

    As they were barred against Chosroes and Caesar

  13. ولَسَدّ طُرْق الموتِ عن أبوابه

    كِسرى وحاد عن المنيّةِ قيصرُ

    And he whom Nizār bore would have dwelt in invincible protection

    With him to guard the mighty fortress

  14. وَلكانَ مَن ولدتْ نِزَارٌ في حمىً

    منه ودفّاعُ العظيمةِ حِميَرُ

    But he passed willingly into death's hand

    No longer inhabiting castles or walking proudly

  15. ولما مضى طوعَ الرّدى متكبّرٌ

    سكن القلاعَ ولا مضى متجبّرُ

    And when he left his family and guests and visitors

    What remained was a deserted place

  16. ولما خلا عن أهله ووفودِه

    وضيوفِه فينا مكانٌ مُقفِرُ

    So look and see if you can discern in what is past

    And has become dust, anything left

  17. فَاُنظُرْ بِعينك هل ترى فيما مضى

    عنّا وصار إلى التّرابِ مخبّرُ

    And I have lost one group after another

    It pleases me to have no group

  18. ولقد فقدتُ معاشراً ومعاشراً

    ويسرّني أنْ لم يكن لِيَ معشَرُ

    And the visitors to the dove-cotes blamed me regarding

    My family and tribe, so they picked and chose

  19. وَاِشتَطّ روّادُ الحمامِ عليَّ في

    أهلي وقومي فاِنتقَوْا وتخيَّروا

    One clad in patchwork amid loose tongues

    Who never wore such motley clothes

  20. فمجدّلٌ وسْطَ الأسنّةِ بالقنا

    ما كان يوماً للّباسِ يُعَصفِرُ

    Another who dirties his garb with spite

    Who never wore such soiled clothes

  21. وَمُعَصفرٌ أَثوابهُ طعن القَنا

    ما كان يوماً للّباس يُعَصفرُ

    Another, if not for fate's decree, would drip

    Stars upon us, who never shone so bright

  22. وَمُقطّرٌ لولا القضاءُ تقطّرتْ

    فينا النجومُ ولم يكن يتقطّرُ

    Another the years pierced his heart

    That was not wont to such red soil

  23. ومُعفّرٌ دخل السّنانُ فؤادَه

    ما كان يألفه الترابُ الأحمرُ

    Those who passed were the best of travellers

    Of those who stayed, none surpassed the rest

  24. والذّاهبون من الّذين ترحّلوا

    ممَّنْ أقام ولم يفتنِي أكثرُ

    Take the fruits of life, which are

    No more than a fleeting glimpse

  25. خذ بالبنانِ من الحياة فإنّما

    هو عارضٌ متكشّفٌ مُتحسّرُ

    Leave off hoarding, which only weighs down

    The happy man with loss upon loss

  26. وَدعِ الكثيرَ فإنَّما لِهمومِه

    جمع النُّضارِ إلى النُّضارِ مُبَدَّرُ

    Life's shadow on the youth

    Is a shadow that deserted him in exile

  27. وكأنّما ظلُّ الحياةِ على الفتى

    ظلٌّ أتاهُ في الهجير مُهجّرُ

    No day of the youth in time is pure white

    With red death looming behind

  28. ما لِلفَتى في الدّهرِ يومٌ أبيضٌ

    ووراءَه بالرّغم موتٌ أحمرُ

    And for those you see dwelling comfortably in their castles

    These pits are being dug

  29. ولِمنْ تراهُ ساكناً في قصره

    مُتنعّماً هذِي الحفائرُ تُحفرُ

    For my father Al-Fatḥ, who hunted glory,

    Tears of sorrow flow from my eyelids

  30. وعلى أبي الفتح الّذي قنص الرّدى

    ماءُ الأسى من مقلتي يتحدّرُ

    He was a joyous companion,

    Now he gives grave advice

  31. قد كان لِي منه أنيسٌ مُبهِجٌ

    فالآن لِي منه وَعوظٌ مُذكِرُ

    If not for our shared origin and Rome

    There is the sanctity of manners between us

  32. إن لم يكن من عُنصري وأرومتِي

    فلحُرمةِ الآدابِ فينا عنصرُ

    Or if the Arabs bore no relation to you

    Those who mastered the language guided you

  33. أو لم تكن للعُربِ فيك ولادَةٌ

    فالمعربون كلامهمْ بك بُصِّرُوا

    It did not harm one the non-Arabs nursed

    Whose upbringing was in Arabic ways

  34. ما ضَرّ شَيئاً مَن نَمَتْه أعاجمٌ

    وَلَديهِ آدابُ الأعاربِ تُسطَرُ

    Yet we have Arabs of pure descent you see

    Blinded to grammatical declension

  35. وَلَكَمْ لَنا عُربُ الأصولِ تراهُمُ

    عُمْياً عَنِ الإِعرابِ لم يَستَبصِروا

    And I feared our friendship torn apart

    By stinginess, and what I feared occurred

  36. وَلَقد حذرتُ من التفرّق بيننا

    شُحّاً عَليك فَجاءني ما أحذرُ

    I hoarded you against the days

    If only a man could keep what he stores

  37. وَذخرتُ منكَ على الزّمانِ نفيسةً

    لَو كانَ يَبقى لِلفَتى ما يذخرُ

    After you I shrugged off those at ease

    Too slothful to rival your virtue

  38. وَنَفضتُ بعدك راحتي من معشرٍ

    لو سابقوك إلى الفضيلةِ قصّرُوا

    When I grieve for you, I excuse my sadness

    When I complain, no excuse will serve

  39. فَمَتى حَزِنتُ عُذِرتُ فيك على الأسى

    وإذا سلوتُ فإِنّني لا أُعذَرُ

    Treachery is the consolation of a friend

    After intimacy, but I will not betray

  40. وَالغَدرُ سُلوانُ الفَتى لِحَميمِه

    بعد الحِمامِ وليس مِثلِي يغدُرُ

    I saw you quench the fires of my passion

    Which make me pour out what I write

  41. وَلَقد رَأيتك مطفئاً من لوعتِي

    والحزن يُملي منه ما أنا أسطُرُ

    So boast of it dead, for how many groups

    Lie in a grave they are proud of !

  42. فَاِفخَرْ بها ميتاً فكم لمعاشرٍ

    من بعد أن قبروا بقبر مَفخرُ

    Words which the old mimic the young with

    As if, rapturously, they never aged

  43. كَلِماً يُعِرْن الشِّيبَ أرديةَ الصِّبا

    فكأنّهمْ طرباً بها لم يكْبَرُوا

    You were a paragon for every anthology

    Circulated on the lips and tongues of the people

  44. وَتراهُ طلّاعاً لكلِّ ثنيّةٍ

    يسري بأفواه الورى ويُسيَّرُ

    Pure without any murkiness marring your clarity

    While poetry turns clear and turbid in turns

  45. يَصفو بِلا كدرٍ يشين صفاءَه

    والشّعر يصفو تارةً ويُكدَّرُ

    As if amid past sayings you dawned

    A moon in the black night shining bright

  46. وكأنّه في ليلِ أقوالٍ مضتْ

    قمرٌ بدا وسْطَ الدُّجُنَّةِ أنورُ

    To you every glance of ours turns

    And every polished cheek of ours is raised

  47. فَإِليهِ مِنّا كلُّ طَرفٍ ناظرٌ

    وعليه مِنّا كلُّ جِيدٍ أَصْوَرُ

    And your Lord gives you the water of every cloud

    That approaches as the rain clouds gather and rain

  48. وَسَقاكَ ربّك ماءَ كلّ سحابةٍ

    تهمي إذا وَنَت الغيوم وَتمطُرُ

    And when your enemies avoid you like a roaring flood

    The evening rain fills your grave like a torrent

  49. وإذا طَوَتْ عنك العُداةُ كَنَهْوَراً

    وافى ترابَك بالعشيّ كنَهْوَرُ

    As if it and the lightning vie in illumination

    A glistening silk in the hands of the winds

  50. وكأنّه والبرقُ ملتمعٌ به

    بُرْدٌ على أيدي الرّياحِ مُحبَّرُ

    And when you slip, to Him who

    Blots out errors as He wills and pardons

  51. وَمَتى ذهبتَ بزلّةٍ فإلى الّذي

    يمحو جرائر مَن يشاء ويغفِرُ
