1. إساءاتٌ وإحسانٌ

    وإعطاءٌ وحِرمانُ

    Mistreatment and kindness

    Giving and withholding

  2. ونقضٌ ثمّ إبرامٌ

    وسرٌّ ثمّ إعلانُ

    Breaking and then mending

    Secrets and then revealing

  3. فكْم ذا أيها الدّهر

    زياداتٌ ونقصانُ

    O Time, how much

    Increase and decrease!

  4. ولِمْ أنتَ لمن عاهد

    تَ أوْ عاقدتَ خَوّانُ

    Why do you betray those

    You make a pact with?

  5. فَلا وصلُك مَوصولٌ

    ولا هجرُك هِجرانُ

    You are connected to none,

    Nor estranged from any.

  6. فمن تكسوه عُريانٌ

    ومَن تسقيه ظمآنُ

    You clothe the naked,

    Quench the thirsty,

  7. ومَن يرجوك محرومٌ

    ومن يعروك أَسوانُ

    Disappoint those hopeful of you,

    Humble the proud before you.

  8. ومَنْ تُدْينهِ أوْ تَهْدِي

    ه مُقْصىً ثمّ حَيْرانُ

    You enrich then confuse,

    Or guide and then lose.

  9. مضى شِيبٌ إلى المَوْت

    كما شاءَ وشُبّانُ

    Gray hair passes unto death

    Like youth in whatever way decreed.

  10. ولمّا يُغنِ أنصارٌ

    من الموتِ وأعوانُ

    No allies can help

    Against death and its hosts.

  11. ولا جاهٌ ولا مالٌ

    ولا عزٌّ وسلطانُ

    No status, wealth, honor, or power

    No lofty clan with towering glory

  12. ولا قومٌ لَهمْ في قل

    لَةِ العلياءِ بُنيانُ

    No mortal remains

    Through days and time.

  13. وما يبقى من النّاس

    على الأيّامِ إِنسانُ

    Where are our drank-mates

    We caroused with in revels?

  14. ألا أين بهاليلٌ

    عهدناهمْ وغُرّانُ

    Bare of fancy raiment unfailing, unbowed

    Were heads and all mankind bodies and bones.

  15. عُراةٌ من لباسِ العا

    رِ ما خانوا ولا مانوا

    In hardship their food was giving and hospitality

    Their homelands were for kindness and grace

  16. رؤوسٌ وجميعُ النّا

    سِ أجسادٌ وأبدانُ

    Kings have passed, even Khusraw

    Was dispatched by events, Khagan.

  17. لَهمْ في أَزَماتِ العُس

    رِ إطعامٌ وضِيفانُ

    Gone are our Edenite friends

    Of Jurhum and Qahtan.

  18. وأَوطانُهُمُ للجو

    دِ والإنعامِ أوطانُ

    Off them fell with death

    Crowns, diadems.

  19. قَضى كِسرى وقد سِيق

    إلى الأحداثِ خاقانُ

    Retainers, favorites

    Advisers and boon-companions.

  20. ولم يبقَ لنا عَدنا

    نُ في باقٍ وقحطانُ

    Horses whose neighing

    Stirred vales- their restive galloping!

  21. وطاحتْ عنهمُ بالمو

    تِ أطواقٌ وتيجانُ

    Bay steeds from war's breeding grounds

    Decked with quality accessories.

  22. وأحراسٌ وآناسٌ

    وولدانٌ وندمانُ

    Swords that clashed in wars,

    Scabbarded, sheathed.

  23. وأفراسٌ لَهنّ السُّمْ

    رُ في الهيجاء أرْسانُ

    False shining splendor

    Trinkets with gems made to gleam.

  24. وسُمْرٌ من سَبايا الخط

    طِ تعلوهنّ خُرصانُ

    Say, mansion-dweller, what use

    Were your mansion and palace?

  25. وأسيافٌ لَهنّ الهْا

    مُ أغمادٌ وأجفانُ

    Sheathed at rest, what avails

    A sheath to a sword?

  26. وزوْراءٌ لغيرِ الثَّكْ

    لِ بالأهلين مِرْنانُ

    Dimmed is virtuous repute

    Like tarnished coin.

  27. فقلْ يا صاحبَ الإيوا

    نِ لم ينجِك إيوانُ

    Lost are Ghudar's blessings

    Where bliss and joy dwell.

  28. ومَن بات على غُمدا

    نَ ماذا ردّ غُمدانُ

    Humbled now is he who once

    Upon glory's summit stood haughty.

  29. وقد خفّ الأُلى كان

    لَهمْ كالخِيسِ خَفّانُ

    Behold, possessions for heirs

    Are nothing but ruins.

  30. وزالتْ نعمٌ غُودِرْ

    نَ يحويهنّ نَعْمانُ

    Unseeing we roam; all humankind

    In their abodes are blind.

  31. وقد ذلّ وقد كان

    محلَّ العزِّ نَجْرانُ

    Though called, where are ears and hearing

    When benefits are mostly loss?

  32. ألا إنّ ذوي الأموا

    لِ للوُرّاثِ خُزّانُ

    No safety though riding the quickest steeds.

    No immortality, death wakes the living.

  33. تعامَيْنا وكلّ النّا

    س في ذي الدّار عُمْيانُ

    Where they dwelt, they're gone

    While we now dwell in their homes.

  34. ونودينا ولكنْ أي

    ن أسماعٌ وآذانُ

    Cares came while still a boy

    Anxieties, a fledgling.

  35. فكمْ ذا نبتغي الرِّبْح

    وبعضُ الرّبحُ خُسرانُ

    Mourning fills me, drawn

    To griefs as to a bosom friend.

  36. وما ننجو وباغينا

    سريعُ الخَطْوِ غَرْثانُ

    I'm crazed with loss of dear ones

    Though not drunken with wine.

  37. ولا خُلْدَ وَطرْفُ المو

    تِ للأحياءِ يَقْظانُ

    They were branches from the tribe

    And comrades, branch-mates.

  38. وفي دارِ الأُلى كانوا

    وبادوا نحن سُكّانُ

    No use were kindred and brothers

    Or intimates and good friends.

  39. أتاني والفتى يأتي

    ه همٌّ وهْوَ جَذْلانُ

    Go your way but in my heart for you

    Are fires forever burning.

  40. نعيٌّ أنَا من جرّا

    هُ بالأحزانِ ملآنُ

    If you build, you're not like a people

    Who in ruin perished, passed away.

  41. كأنّي خَبَلاً منه

    وما بي السُّكْرُ سكرانُ

    If I'm diverted, I've naught

    To divert me from thoughts of you.

  42. ذوى غصنٌ من الأصحا

    بِ والأصحابُ أغصانُ

    Without you, my joy in bliss

    Is loss.

  43. ولم يُغنِ الّذي يُغني

    هِ أهلونَ وإخوانُ

    No more joy for heart,

    Nor rest for eyelid.

  44. وإنْ تمضي ففي قلبي

    عليك الدّهرَ نيرانُ

    Rainclouds weeping

    Drenched your grave in downpours.

  45. وإنْ بنتَ فما أنتَ

    كقومٍ بالرّدى بانوا

    Morning and night

    It is blessed, thriving.

  46. وإن سُلِّيتُ ما عندي

    لمُسلٍ عنك سُلوانُ

    The breath of life still

    Stirs it, and sweet herbs.

  47. ولي مِن بعدِ فِقداني

    ك للسّرّاءِ فِقدانُ

    Forgiveness if you erred,

    Blessing and good pleasure.

  48. وما للقلبِ أفراحٌ

    ولا للغمضِ أجفانُ

    Among your folk you were

    Faithful in creed.

  49. سقى قبرك هطّالٌ

    من الأنواءِ هتّانُ

    Certain of faith when others doubted,

    Surrendered when others refused.

  50. له في الصّبحِ والإمسا

    ءِ إرزامٌ وإرْنانُ

    You befriended ones who

    On Judgment Day shall be favored.

  51. ولا زالَ به رَوْحٌ

    تلقّاه وريحانُ

    Bestowing on the Lord

    Grace when needed, kindness ever.

  52. وغفرانٌ عن الإجرا

    مِ إِنْ كانتْ ورضوانُ

    On the day mankind is resurrected,

    Be among them wherever they are!

  53. فقد كنتَ من القومِ

    لهمْ باللَّه إيمانُ

  54. وإيقانٌ إذا شكَّ

    أُولو الشكّ وإِذْعانُ

  55. وقد والَيْتَ مَن في عَرْ

    صَةِ البعثِ لهمْ شانُ

  56. وإنعامٌ على الموْلى

    إِذا شاؤوا وإحسانُ

  57. فكن يوم نشور الخَلْ

    قِ فيهمْ حيثما كانوا
