1. يا حادِيَ الأظعانِ عرّجْ

    بِي هُديتَ إلى الطُّفُوفِ

    O guide of sorrows, turn

    Towards me, you were guided to Al-Tufouf

  2. عرّجْ إلى ذاك المحل

    لِ الفَخمِ والعطَنِ الشّريفِ

    Turn towards that place

    Of spaciousness and noble hospitality

  3. حيث الثّرى مُلقىً هنا

    ك على قَرا جبلٍ مُنيفِ

    Where soil lies here

    As if on the ridge of a lofty mountain

  4. حيث القِرى عفو الإلَ

    هِ عن القبائحِ للضّيوفِ

    Where villages pardon a guest's

    Shortcomings

  5. ماذا يريبُك ريب غي

    رُك من عكوفي أو وقوفي

    What doubts you have, other than mine

    Of my staying or leaving

  6. فَلَقَلَّما نَفِسَ الرّفي

    قُ عليَّ بالنَّزْرِ الطّفيفِ

    Rarely does the gentle soul

    Blame me for my slight error

  7. ومتى رأيتَ مدامِعي

    تنهلُّ بالدّمعِ الوكيفِ

    And when you see my tears

    Flowing abundantly

  8. فعلَى الّتي ولّتْ بها

    عن ساحتي أيدي الحتُوفِ

    Over her who turned away

    From my court the hands of separation

  9. وسَقَينَنِي بفراقها

    كأساً من السُّمِّ المدوفِ

    And made me drink after parting with her

    A cup of pure poison

  10. وكأنّني لمّا سمع

    تُ نَعِيَّها مثلُ النَّزيفِ

    As if when I heard

    News of her death, I was like copious bleeding

  11. أو مُعْجَلٌ دامي القَرا

    والصّدرِ منفصمُ الوَظيفِ

    Or a wounded man whose chest

    And ribs were torn

  12. أو أعزَلٌ نبذ الزّما

    نُ به إلى الشَّقّ المخوفِ

    Or a helpless man who abandoned his time

    And retreated into fearful solitude

  13. يا موتُ كم لك في فؤا

    دي من نُدوبٍ أو قروفِ

    Oh death, how many scars

    And wounds you have caused me

  14. ألّا أخذتَ بمن أخذ

    تَ تَليدَ مالي أو طريفي

    If only you had taken those

    Who took my money and fine clothes

  15. وعدلتَ عن كهفي ودو

    نَكَ ما أردتَ من الكهوفِ

    And avoided my cave and shunned

    Whatever you wanted of caves

  16. كم ذا أَصابتْ مُصمِيا

    تُكَ من خليلٍ أو أَليفِ

    How many intimate friends

    Have your arrows struck down

  17. أضحى معي زَمَنَ الرّبي

    عِ وراح عنّي في المصيفِ

    Who stayed with me in days of prosperity

    And left me in summer

  18. فاتَ القويَّ من الخطو

    بِ ومات بالخطْبِ الضَّعيفِ

    The strong have passed

    And died amidst weak troubles

  19. يا مُخرجَ الآسادِ خا

    شعَةَ الرؤوس من الغَريفِ

    O revealer of diseases

    That humble proud heads

  20. يا قانصاً نفسَ الشُجا

    عِ يكرّ ما بين الصّفوفِ

    O harvester of noble souls

    From among curtains and veils

  21. يا مُبرِزَ الغِيدِ الحِسا

    نِ من السّتائرِ والسُّجوفِ

    And disrober of bodies

    Of garments and coverings

  22. ومُعَرِّيَ الأجسادِ مِنْ

    سَرَقِ السّبائبِ والشُّفُوفِ

    O doer of what you desire

    By force despite unwillingness

  23. يا فاعلاً ما يشتهي

    قهراً على رغم الأُنوفِ

    How can I escape misfortune

    And its paths when my grave is near

  24. كيف الفِرارُ من الرّدى

    وعلى مسالكِهِ وجيفي

    Or how can I be saved from one

    Closer to me than my saddle's back

  25. أم كيف أنجو من يَدَيْ

    أدنى إليّ من الرّديفِ

    If I try to escape, my slowness

    Will not let you know of my light step

  26. وإذا سعيتُ أفوتُهُ

    لم تدرِ بُطْئي من خُفوفي

    You cannot be avoided with spears

    Or swords

  27. لا تُتّقى منه البَلِي

    يةُ بالرّماح أو السّيوفِ

    Humiliation is our lot

    And love of the aloof, our banner

  28. ذلٌّ لنا وشِعارنا

    حبٌّ لنافرةٍ صَدوفِ

    Like the deceitful, you hid

    Idle and sprang with claws

  29. مثلُ البَغِيِّ تبطّنَتْ

    عَطَلاً ولاحتْ بالشُّنوفِ

    You strip the devout of piety

    And make the upright man stumble

  30. تُعرِي التقيَّ من التُّقى

    وتَزِلُّ بالرّجلِ العفيفِ

    And how many pure intimacies

    Have you corrupted and defiled

  31. وَلَكَمْ بها مِن مَخْبَرٍ

    صَدئٍ ومن مرأىً مَشوفِ

    And I had grown accustomed to her love

    But returned deprived of the beloved

  32. ولقد ألِفتُ وصالها

    فرجعتُ مستلفَ الأليفِ

    Empty-handed of fighting

    And virtue and aloofness

  33. صِفْرَ اليدين من القنا

    عةِ والنّزاهةِ والعُزوفِ

    All glory in life is for

    The fickle and frivolous

  34. والعزُّ كلُّ العزِّ في الد

    دُنيا لطَيّانٍ خفيفِ

    Who forsake pleasures

    And heed the loud call of inevitable death

  35. ترك المُنى وأَقام ير

    قُبُ هَتْفَةَ الأجلِ الهتوفِ
