1. نَوِّلِينا منكِ الغداةَ قليلا

    وصِلِينا فقد هجرتِ طويلا

    Grant us a brief respite in the morn, for long have you been estranged.

    We bid farewell to weariness, for we know of no lover like the fickle one.

  2. ودعينا من المَلالِ فما نَعْ

    رفُ مولىً في الحبّ إلّا ملولا

    Obey us in this, though you're wont to obey the fickle in love.

    Promise us, though the promise of procrastinators is often hollow.

  3. وأطيعي فينا العذولَ فما زِلْ

    تِ تطيعين في المحبّ العذولا

    We passed by the abodes, changed to ruins in Jeddah, in gloom.

    Our eyes denied recognizing them, save their vestiges and hills.

  4. وعِدِينا فربّما علّل ال

    وعد في الماطلين قلباً عليلا

    In the vale of Basham, had we tread its soil, our hearts would have healed.

    Beauty gathered in his face, deeming all shame as gain.

  5. قد مررنا على الدّيار تبدّلْ

    ن دثوراً بِجِدّةٍ وخمولا

    Say to the brooding soul: Patience is fair, but the fickle is not.

    We knew not that sleep is rest; elsewise we'd have found our way to it.

  6. نَكِرتْها منّا العيونُ فما تعر

    رفُ إلّا رسومَها والطّلولا

    Age came to my dark-tressed darling, and she cried: "Ill lodged is the lodger!"

    And saw a streak as if a bared sword of my gray hair.

  7. وبوادي البَشامِ مَن لو رشفنا

    ه شفينا من الفؤاد غليلا

    His color startled her, and were it not for the affliction of singers,

    she'd have deemed him fearsome.

  8. جمع الحسنَ وجهُه فتولّى

    يحسبَ العارَ كلَّه أن يُنيلا

    She saw in him what misfortunes deny: unfading East.

    Blame him not, for gray hair shows the youth was meant to endure.

  9. قلْ لمُغْرٍ بالصّبر وهو خليٌّ

    وجميلُ العذول ليس جميلا

    The hue of youth is fleeting; how could it last if time went on?

    If I could choose, and black my gown, I'd never want white instead.

  10. ما جهلنا أنّ السُّلوّ مريحٌ

    لو وجدنا إلى السّلوِّ سبيلا

    The blade of youth unburnished is far dearer than the burnished one.

    We sought, but ‘gainst gray hairs no refuge could shield us.

  11. جزعت للمشيب جانيةُ الشّي

    بِ وقالت بئس النّزيلُ نزيلا

    The pride of kings, faith and state conferred on me a heavy boon.

    I gained from it more than wishing, when before it we had no envoys.

  12. ورأتْ لِمّةً كأنّ عليها

    صارماً من مشيبها مسلولا

    So whenever I stood before him, he prolonged my sitting

    While all around gazed on the place where nobles sat in throngs

  13. راعها لونُه ولم تَرَ لولا

    عَنَتُ الغانياتِ منه مهولا

    Each day had a generous deed, though time was fickle and unwise

    Gifts came, though the zealous sent no herald for them

  14. عاينتْ منه والحوادثُ يُنكِرْ

    ن طلوعاً لم ترجُ منه أُفولا

    Dawns shone as you looked to the Pleiades, dusks cleaved as you donned night's gown

    A passion for giving, generous if he gave treasure, or answered the needy

  15. لا تذمّيه فالمشيبُ على طو

    ل بقاءِ الفتى يكون دليلا

    He pardoned the niggard's excuse; how oft have we offered apology for the blamer's stinginess!

    Ask him, if you know not the forbidden days in which the ignorant taught.

  16. إنّ لون الشّباب حال لو اِمتد

    دَ زمانٌ أنّى لها أن تحولا

    After the Son of Wāṣil[1] ruled, after he was an august king

    He secluded him in a nook, where he made the waves his cave and rest

  17. لو تخيّرتُ والسّوادُ ردائي

    ما أردتُ البياض منه بديلا

    On a ship that yesterday had no sail save shreds and steeds

    Nothing but howdahs routed, and coats of mail, deadly lances and blades

  18. وحسامُ الشبابِ غير صقيلٍ

    هو أشهى إِليَّ منه صقيلا

    Seeking haven in the sea's swell, neither wishing a stay nor departing

    He shunned death in war, mighty, so slunk away and died disgraced

  19. قد طلبنا فما وجدنا عن الشّي

    بِ محيصاً يُجيرنا أو مُميلا

    As for the mountains he sought refuge on, you made every gentle hill a plain

    No shame or disgrace in being wise when destruction looms ahead

  20. إنّ فخر الملوك والدّين والدّو

    لةِ ألقى عليَّ مَنّاً ثقيلا

    Those hills refused long, but when you wearied them they yielded

    A new moon wished them humbled, but it waned and sparked no flame

  21. نلتُ منه فوق المُنى وعُدمنا

    قبله مَن يبلّغِ المأمولا

    It visited in their weakness like beasts of the wold in the night, timid and vile

    And saw itself cowering from open war, so it sheathed its claw in stealth

  22. فمتى ما مَثَلْتُ بين يديه

    مدّ ضَبْعِي حتّى شأَوْتُ المُثولا

    You awaited its rising as though expecting it, while it hoped for negligence

    Amongst men whose lances, when their blades grew dull, slaked themselves in blood

  23. وقراني والشّاهدون كثيرٌ

    منه ذاك التّرحيبَ والتأهيلا

    Who were weaned on stabbing steeds and striking down young and old

    So it dwelt after you favored it with capture, else it would have been slain

  24. ثمّ أدنى إلى المحلّ الّذي ين

    ظر نحوي فيه المساقون حُولا

    Wearing the rags of life, though the necklace of life had been severed

    O greatest of earth's nobles, carpenter and tent-pitcher

  25. كلّ يومٍ له صنيعٌ كريمٌ

    كان للدّهر غُرّةً وحجولا

    Dwelling and companion and tribe

    By whom all hardship was rendered easy, and glory made tame

  26. وأيادٍ جاءتْ وما بعث العا

    في إليها من الطِّلاب رسولا

    Thanks to God that you facilitated the ancient abode's attainment

    Without you, the pilgrims could not have descended upon the sacred mosque

  27. مُشرقاتٍ كما نظرتَ الثُّريّا

    أَرِجاتٍ كما نشقتَ الشَّمولا

    Nor hamstrung camels at Mina, wary, nor dragged banners at the station

    You shared with them, residing in your homeland, that chanting and praising

  28. وولوعٍ بالجود يُجزِلُ إن أع

    طى نفيساً وإنْ أجاب سؤولا

    The blessed Feast of the Sacrifice is come, quickly carrying your desires

    So welcome it, soft and gentle, wandering amidst sweetmeats

  29. ترك العذرَ للبخيل وكم نح

    حى اِعتذاراً من الملام بخيلا

    Each day the Sauds meet you without reserve, morning and eve

    And God ordained you should remain in dear glory, desiring you endure

  30. سلْ به إنْ جهلتَ أيّامه الغر

    رَ اللّواتي علّمن فيه الجهولا

    Then gave you, in glory and nobility, that hope and expectation

    If they beget and flourish, ‘tis by your flourishing when you begot origins

  31. مَن سطا باِبن واصلٍ بعد أنْ كا

    ن لملك الملوك خطباً جَليلا

    And as we knew the lions of the wilds, striding with our youths

  32. لَزَّه في قَرارةٍ تخذ اللُّج

    جةَ منها كهفاً له ومَقيلا

  33. في سفينٍ ما كنّ بالأمسِ في أَرْ

    بَقَ إلّا نَجائباً وخيولا

  34. وأَلالاً مَذْروبة ودروعاً

    ورماحاً خطّارةً ونُصولا

  35. مستجيراً بغمرةِ الماء لا ين

    وي مقاماً ولا يريد رحيلا

  36. كره الموتَ في النّزالِ عزيزاً

    فاِنثنى هارباً فمات ذليلا

  37. والجبال اللّاتي اِعتَصَمْن على كل

    لِ مُريغٍ جعلتهنّ سهولا

  38. لَم تَنلها ختلاً وشرٌّ من الخَيْ

    بةِ في الأمر أن تكون خَتولا

  39. وأبيها تلك القِلالُ لقد ما

    طَلْن من بأسك الشّديد مُطولا

  40. لم يؤاتين طيّعاتٍ ولكنْ

    زُلْن لمّا أعيَيْتها أن تزولا

  41. وهلالٌ أرادها غِرَّةً من

    ك فولّى وَما أَصاب فتيلا

  42. زار وَهْناً كما تزور ذئاب ال

    قاع ليلاً فسالةً ونكولا

  43. وَرأى نفسه تهاب من الحر

    بِ جَهاراً فاِختان حرباً غَلولا

  44. فتلقّيتَه كمنتظرٍ من

    هُ طلوعاً وكان يرجو الغُفولا

  45. في رجال شمٍّ إِذا رئموا الضَّي

    مَ أسالوا من الدّماءِ سيولا

  46. ألِفوا الطّعنَ في التّرائب واللَّب

    باتِ شِيباً وصبْيَةً وكهولا

  47. فثوى بعد أن مَنَنْتَ عليه

    في إسارٍ لولاه كان قتيلا

  48. لابساً رِبْقَةَ الحياةِ وقد كا

    ن قطوعاً عِقْدَ الحياةِ حَلولا

  49. يا أعزّ الورى نِجاراً وخِيماً

    وَمحلّا وجانباً وقبيلا

  50. والّذي عاد كلُّ صعبٍ من السُّؤْ

    دُدِ والمجد في يديه ذَلولا

  51. شكر اللَّه منك أنّك سَهّل

    ت إلى بيته العتيق الوصولا

  52. ورفاق الحجيج لولاك ما كا

    نوا على المشعر الحرامِ نزولا

  53. لا ولا عقّروا بخَيْفِ مِنىً نِي

    باً وجرّوا على المقام ذيولا

  54. أنتَ شاطرتهمْ مقيماً بأوطا

    نك ذاك التّكبير والتّهليلا

  55. إنّ عيد النّحرِ المبارك قد جا

    ء سريعاً بما تحبّ عجولا

  56. فاِغشَه ناعمَ الجوانح جَذْلا

    نَ شروداً في الطيّباتِ دَخولا

  57. لا جفاك السّعودُ من كلّ يومٍ

    وتلقّاك بكرةً وأصيلا

  58. وَقَضى اللَّه في بقائك في عز

    زٍ عزيزٍ مَرامُه أن يطولا

  59. ثمّ أعطاك في الأعزّ وفي الأش

    رفِ ذاك الرّجاءَ والتّأميلا

  60. فلئن أنجبا وطابا فروعاً

    فبما طبتَ إذ نجبت أصولا

  61. وعلى مثل ما عهدنا ليوثُ ال

    غاب تمضي قِدْماً عهدنا الشُّبولا
