1. دَعِ الهَوى يَتبعه الأخرقُ

    لا صبوةَ اليومَ ولا مَعْشَقُ

    Let passion be followed by the disgraceful one

    No morning drink today, nor a beloved

  2. ولا دموعٌ خَلْفَ مستوفِزٍ

    تجري ولا قلبٌ له يخفقُ

    Neither tears flowing behind an instigator

    Flowing, nor a heart that would beat for it

  3. ولو درى أهلُ الهوى بالّذي

    جَنَى الهوى من قبل لم يعشِقوا

    Had the passionate known what

    Passion had yielded before, they would not have fallen in love

  4. يا جَمْلُ لا أبصرني بعدها

    أرنو إليه وجهُكِ المُشرِقُ

    O beautiful camel, let me not see you after her

    I yearn for your radiant face

  5. لو لم أُعرّضْ للهوى مهجتي

    ما كان قلبي بالهوى يُسْرَقُ

    Had I not exposed my essence to passion

    My heart would not have been stolen by passion

  6. لا فرعُكِ الفاحمُ يقتادني

    ولا اِطّبانِي غُصنُك المورقُ

    Neither your arched branch leads me

    Nor do your tender twigs beckon me

  7. كنت أسيراً بالهوى عانياً

    فالآن قلبي من هوىً مطلقُ

    I used to walk bent by passion, suffering

    But now my heart is free of passion

  8. سَلْوانُ تجتاز به دائباً

    روائحُ الحبِّ فلا يَعبقُ

    The paths that Sulaïm frequents perpetually

    The scents of love can't penetrate him

  9. فمَنْ يكن من حبّكمْ مُثْرِياً

    فإنّنِي من بينهمْ مُمْلِقُ

    So whoever accumulates your love

    I am the one among them growing cold

  10. لا طَرَقَ الطّيفُ الّذي كان مِنْ

    أكبر همّي أنّه يطرُقُ

    The phantom that used to be

    My greatest worry is that it knocks

  11. حَدَّثَ قلبي وهْوَ طوعُ الهوى

    محدّثٌ باللّيل لا يصدقُ

    It conversed with my heart - a willing slave of passion

    A night talker not to be believed

  12. وكيف لولا أنّه باطلٌ

    يسري ولا سارتْ به الأيْنُقُ

    And how could it be real

    Roaming without the beautiful doe pacing gracefully?

  13. زار وما زار سوى ذكرِهِ

    وبيننا داوِيَّةٌ سَمْلَقُ

    It visited, but only its memory visited

    While between us lies a deserted enclosure

  14. غرّاءُ لا يُمسي بِأَرجائِها

    إلّا ظَليمٌ خلفه نِقْنِقُ

    A bleak wasteland with only the howl of a hyena

    Had it not been for a rescue ship therein

  15. لَولا مَطِيٌّ كَسفينٍ بها

    لكان مَن يركبها يَفْرَقُ

    Those who board it would have perished

    Who will excuse me for a time that whenever

  16. مَن عاذري مِن زَمنٍ كلّما

    طلبتُ منه راحةً أَخفِقُ

    I sought rest from it, I despaired?

    It specifically afflicts its free ones with harm

  17. يخصّ بالضّرّاءِ أحرارَه

    ويَرزقُ السَّرّاءَ من يَرزقُ

    And endows prosperity to those it endows

    Its company is crooked, never straightening

  18. صحبتُه أعوجَ لا ينثنِي

    ومعجلاً بالشّرِّ لا يرفقُ

    And quick to evil, never gentle

    At times it widens its domains

  19. طوراً هو الموسعُ أقطارَه

    وتارة أخرى هو الضيّقُ

    And at others it constricts

    Had I spent my honor on it

  20. لو أنّني أُنفقُ عِرْضِي به

    كنتُ عليه أبداً أَنفُقُ

    I would have spent it forever

    The dignity of a man is to curb his needs

  21. عزّ الفتى يكظِمُ حاجاتهِ

    والنّاسُ مُستثرٍ ومسترزقُ

    While people exaggerate their needs and requests

    So what does a despicable one care for wishes

  22. فما يبالِي حاقرٌ للمنى

    جِيدَ اللّوى أم سُقِىَ الأبرقُ

    Is the neck of glory sated or the lightning spear?

    And whenever he strives for greatness

  23. وكلّما هوّم في سَبْسَبٍ

    وَسَّدهُ السَّاعدُ والمِرفقُ

    His arm and elbow hold him back

    A new honor not to be worn down by time

  24. عِرْضٌ جديدٌ لا ينال البِلى

    منه وثوبٌ مُنهَجٌ مُخلَقُ

    An intact garment not to be torn

    And maybe an idle man claims in pretense

  25. وربّما نال الفتى وادعاً

    ما لم ينله المزعَجُ المُقْلَقُ

    What the worried and restless one can't attain

    And without a man reaching his full potential

  26. ودون نيلِ المرءِ أوطارَه

    فتقٌ على الأيّامِ لا يُرتَقُ

    A cleft remains in the days that can't be scaled

    And everything whose beauty pleased us

  27. وكلُّ شيءٍ راقنا حسنهُ

    فهْوَ سرابٌ في الضحى يبرقُ

    Is a mirage in the daylight that flickers

    The love of this ruin is an incurable

  28. وحبُّ هذي الدّارِ خوّانةً

    داءٌ دويٌّ ما له مُفرِقُ

    Deep-seated disease that has no remedy

    Where are the departed who camped the summits

  29. أين الأُلى حلّو قِلالَ العُلا

    فُمزِّقوا من بعد أن مَزَّقوا

    Then were torn after they had torn?

    As if after they had set

  30. كأنّهمْ من بعد أن غرّبوا

    لم يطلعوا قطّ ولم يشرقوا

    They never rose and shone again

    They trampled splendor with their feet

  31. داسوا بأقدامهم شُمَّخاً

    تُرامُ بالأيدي ولا تُلْحَقُ

    Cast down but not to be picked up again

    And every star shining in the darkness

  32. وكلَّ نجمٍ بالدّجَى ساطعٍ

    يرميه نحو المغربِ المشرقُ

    The East throws it toward the West

    As if it were an ember from firebrands

  33. كأنّه من قَبَسٍ جذوَةٌ

    أو عن لهيبٍ خلفه يُفتَقُ

    Or a remnant of flames left to kindle

    How many they brought down from the peaks

  34. كم أوضعوا في طُرُقاتِ العُلا

    وحلّقوا في العزّ إذْ حلّقوا

    And ascended to glory when they ascended

    Until when it came time to reach the goal

  35. حتّى إذا حان بلوغُ المَدى

    قِيدوا إلى المكروه أو سُوِّقوا

    They were led to what they hated or driven

    They fell to death and how many casualties

  36. طاحوا إلى الموتِ وكم طائحٍ

    لم يُغنِ عنه حَذِرٌ مُشفِقُ

    Had no cautious sympathizer to avail?

    We are a people who seek the heights

  37. نحن أناسٌ لطِلابِ العُلا

    نخُبُّ في الأيّامِ أو نَعْنِقُ

    We grieve or perish in the days

    God has not created the like of us

  38. ما خَلقَ اللَّه لَنا مُشبهاً

    في غابر الدّهرِ ولا يخلُقُ

    In the bygone days, nor will He create

    How many who aimed to rise up our stumps

  39. كم رام أن يصعد أطوادَنا

    بَواذِخاً قومٌ فلم يرتقوا

    Lofty were unable, nor could attain

    Or overtake what expanded of our affairs

  40. أَو يَلحقوا ما اِمتدَّ من شَأْوِنا

    في طلب العزّ فلم يلحقوا

    In seeking glory, but couldn't overtake

    I have told the people, and how many ambitious ones

  41. قد قلت للقوم وكم طامعٍ

    يُصبِحُ بالباطل أو يغبُقُ

    Awaken to falsehood, or slumber in vain?

    Where are our great fish from the ocean depth?

  42. أين من البَوْغاءِ أسماكُنا

    ومن ثِمادٍ بحرُنا المُفْهَقُ

    And from the bounty of our tumultuous sea?

    In the forest, and the forest is an allegory for you

  43. في الغاب والغابُ مجازٌ لكمْ

    ليثٌ بلا عذر الكرى يُطرِقُ

    A lion without shame of prey that stalks

    In his grip is the figure of destiny

  44. في كفّه مثلُ حِدادِ المُدى

    يفرِي بها الجلدَ ولا تَخْلِقُ

    Skinning hides without slicing them

    His deadly stroke from afar

  45. يَغتالُ طولَ البعد إرقالُه

    فَمُنْجِدٌ إنْ شاء أو مُعْرِقُ

    A rescuer if he wills, or one who slaughters

    So how many slain around him for havoc

  46. فكم صريعٍ عنده للرّدَى

    وكم نجيعٍ حوله يُهرقُ

    And how many wounded around him pour out blood?

    As if a thread upon wrath

  47. كأنّما خيط على غضبةٍ

    فهوَ مغيظٌ أبداً مُحنَقُ

    He is forever indignant and enraged

    Vacate those whose inhabitants are a people

  48. خلّوا الّتي سكّانُها معشرٌ

    هُمُ بها من غيرهمْ ألْيَقُ

    Who are more befitting of it than others

    Their canal of glory cannot be ascended

  49. قناتُهمْ في المجد لا تُرتَقَى

    وجُردُهم في الجود لا تُسبَقُ

    And their stream of generosity cannot be preceded

    A people, when they gain opportunity in battle

  50. قومٌ إذا ما سنحوا في الوغى

    سالوا دماً أو قدحوا أحرقوا

    They shed blood, ignite, and burn

    With every sharpened spear

  51. بكلِّ مشحوذِ الظُّبا أبيضٍ

    وأسمرٍ يعلو به أزرقُ

    White or brown raised blue

    No champion resembles a vicious devourer

  52. لا باسلٌ يشبهه ناكِلٌ

    ولا صميمٌ مثلُه مُلْحَقُ

    And no loyal one resembles an annexed one

    And no equal near one with a disability

  53. ولا سواءٌ عند ذي إِرْبَةٍ

    باطنُ رجلِ المرءِ والمَفْرقُ

    The inner side of a man's foot and his spur

    You have slipped in a twisting path for it

  54. وقد زلقتُم في مطافٍ له

    بابٌ إلى العزّ ولم يزلقوا

    With a gate to glory but they did not slip

    And you thought glory an easily grasped prize

  55. وخلتُمُ أنّ العُلا نُهْزَةٌ

    يعلقها بالكفّ مَن يَعْلِقُ

    Seized in the palm by whoever seizes

    Until we saw it in your hands

  56. حتّى رأيناها بأيديكُمُ

    تزِلُّ أو تَزلقُ أو تَمْرُقُ

    Slipping, sliding, or tearing

    And beneath you due to the baseness of your deeds

  57. ودونكمْ من لؤمِ أفعالكمْ

    بابٌ إلى ساحاتها مُغلَقُ

    Is a gate to its plains locked shut

    Some people sought sanctuary

  58. إنّ أناساً طلبوا حُوَّماً

    وِرْداً شربنا صفوَه ما سُقوا

    A draught we drank the purest they drank

    They are not of pride nor near it

  59. لَيسوا منَ الفخرِ ولا عنده

    ولا لهمْ في رَبْعِه مَطْرَقُ

    Nor for them in its sanctuary a place

    If asked while in debt, they are stingy

  60. إنْ سُئلوا في مَغْرَمٍ بَخَّلوا

    أو جُمعوا في معركٍ فُرِّقوا

    Or gathered in battle, they flee

    And nothing flows eternally in the world

  61. وليس يجري أبداً في الورى

    إلّا بِما ساءَهمُ المنطقُ

    Except what their speech despised

    Say to the relators of poetry, race therein

  62. قل لرواةِ الشّعر جوبوا بها

    فجّاً من الإحسانِ لا يُطرَقُ

    A rugged generosity not to be trodden

    As if it were a garden in a hilltop

  63. كأنّها في ربوةٍ روضةٌ

    أو من شبابٍ ناعمٍ رَيِّقُ

    Or tender youth, thin and delicate

    It turned away from softness as if

  64. صِينتْ عن اللّين على أنّها

    غانٍ بها الإشراقُ والرَّوْنَقُ

    Dawn and splendor dwelt within it

    So how many people whose

  65. فكم أُناسِ بقيتْ منهُمُ

    محاسنُ الشِّعر وما أنْ بقوا

    Virtues of poetry remained though they are gone
