لا تَسَلْنِي عَمّا أَراهُ فإنّي

كُلَّ يومٍ أَرى بِعَيني عَجيبا

Do not ask me what I see, for each day

I see wonders before my eyes.

كُلّ داءٍ في القَلبِ منّي وَفي الجِس

مِ عَلى أَنَّني عَدِمتُ الطَّبيبا

Every sickness of the heart comes from me,

As if I lack a doctor altogether.

أَتَمنّى لَو باتَ مِنّي بعيداً

كلُّ مَن كانَ في جِواري قَريبا

I wish that everyone near me

Would remain far away.

يا خَليلي عَلى الرّخاءِ في البؤْ

سِ أَصِخْ لي أشكو إليك الخطوبا

My friend, lament with me amidst prosperity

The misfortunes I complain of to you.

وَسِهاماً أَصَبْنَ جِسمي فلمّا

لم تضِرْني أَصبن منّا القلوبا

Arrows have struck my body but when

They did no harm, they struck our hearts.

لا أَرى إِذْ رأيت إلّا مَعيباً

وَهْوَ مَعْ ذاكَ طالبٌ لي عيوبا

Whenever I look, I see only faults

While seeking faults in me as well.

وَمِلاءٌ مِنَ الذُّنوب سَجاياهُ

وَيَنعى بُطلاً عليّ الذُّنوبا

His qualities are full of sins,

And he blames the sins on me.
