رأيتكْم في أمورٍ غير مسفرةٍ

ما يَنقَضي شُغُلٌ إلّا إلى شُغِلِ

I saw you occupied with undisclosed affairs,

One preoccupation leads only to another preoccupation.

فإِنْ تكنْ تلكمُ الأشغالُ قاطعةً

عَن غَيركمْ فَشفاها اللَّه من عللِ

If those matters preoccupy you from others,

May Allah cure them of their harms.

وإنْ يكن ذاكَ تعويقاً لشرّكمُ

فينا فيا حبّذا الأشغالُ من عُقَلِ

But if they hinder your evil,

Blessed are those wise preoccupations!

لا خير فيمن تناساه الرّجاءُ فما

تسري إليه بنيّاتٌ من الأملِ

No good in one forgotten by hope, no

Intentions of hope approach him.

ولم يَبِتْ أحدٌ منه وإن بعدتْ

عنه محلّته إلّا على وَجَلِ

And none of them spent a night, even if

His abode were far removed, except anxious and distressed.
