1. هَل عائِدٌ يَنفع من عِلّتِي

    أو مُسْعِدٌ ينقع من غُلَّتِي

    Is there a cure that can heal my illness,

    Or joy that can sweeten my bitterness?

  2. أو عادلٌ ينصفنِي حُكمهُ

    من جور هذا الزّمن المُعْنِتِ

    Is there a just judge whose rule

    Can save me from the tyranny of this harsh age?

  3. أسعى ولا أدرِي إلى مُنيَتِي

    وَإِنّما أَسعى إلى ميتتي

    I strive though I know not towards what end,

    Nay, I strive only towards my death.

  4. كم نعمةٍ آلتْ إلى نِقمَةٍ

    وفَرْحَةٍ حالت إلى تَرْحةِ

    How many blessings have turned into curses,

    And joys become sorrows!

  5. وَغِبْطَةٍ لمّا اِستَوتْ للفتى

    وَنالَ منها سُؤْلَهُ ولّتِ

    When good fortune came to a youth

    And he gained what he sought, it deserted him.

  6. إِنْ كانَ زادَ الدّهر في فِطنَتِي

    فَبالّذي أنقصَ من فِطْرَتي

    If the days have increased my wisdom,

    They have diminished my innocence.

  7. أَو قوّمتْ أيّامُهُ خِبْرَتِي

    فبالّذي طَأْطأ من صَعْدَتِي

    Or if they have augmented my experience,

    They have bowed my determination.

  8. يُقِرُّ عَيْنَيَّ بما فقدُهُ

    بعد قليلٍ مُسبلٌ عَبرتي

    It gladdens my eye with what it will lose

    In a little while when my tears flow.

  9. في كلّ يومٍ أنَا في وقعةٍ

    مَعْ نُوَبِ الدّهر وفي خُطّةِ

    Each day I am in a calamity

    With the vicissitudes of fate and its schemes.

  10. بَينا تَراهُ مُسِلفاً قرَّتي

    حتّى تراه مُتلِفاً قوّتِي

    It loans me my comfort

    Until it takes away my strength altogether.

  11. يولِجُ حِرماني عَلى مُنْيَتِي

    خَبْطاً وإيلامِي على لَذَّتِي

    It leads my deprivation to my death

    And my pain to my pleasure.

  12. فَليتَهُ لَمّا طوى عَزمهُ

    بميتتِي لم يُعطِنِي عِيشَتِي

    Would that when it had made up its mind

    To end my life, it had not given me my livelihood!

  13. لَولايَ كان الدّهر من أهلِهِ

    بغير أوضاحٍ ولا غُرّةِ

    Had it been of its people,

    It would have been without deception or trickery.

  14. وَقَد درى الأقوامُ أَنّي اِمرؤٌ

    أواصلُ الصدَّ عن السَّوْأَةِ

    Yet people know I am a man

    Who wards off harm from the vulnerable.

  15. لا أضمرُ السّوءَ لذي خُلّةٍ

    ولا أُرى في طُرُقِ التُّهمَةِ

    I bear no malice towards one who is weak,

    Nor do I walk the paths of suspicion.

  16. ولم تقُدْني في حِبالِ الهَوى

    مَحاسِنُ البَهْكَنَةِ الطَّفلةِ

    The charms of a coquettish damsel

    Did not lead me into the fetters of passion.

  17. ذو عَزْمةٍ ما نَشَزتْ ساعةً

    واحدةً عن رِبْقَةِ العِفَّةِ

    I am resolute, never deviating for an instant

    From the path of chastity.

  18. وَلا ترى ميلاً إلى جانبٍ

    لافى رِضاً منّي ولا سَخْطَةِ

    You will not see in me an inclination

    To any side that earns not my pleasure or displeasure.

  19. لا فرق بُعداً مِن ركوبِ الهَوى

    بينِيَ في الكِبْرَةِ والشِّرَّةِ

    In avoiding the labyrinths of love

    I do not distinguish between old and young.

  20. فَجانبُ الجِدِّ به صَبْوَتِي

    وجانبُ الهَزْل به نَبْوتِي

    The realm of seriousness is my youth

    And the realm of frivolity my maturity.

  21. كم لِيَ ي مُرِّ ثمارِ الهوى

    من فكرةٍ رُضْتُ بها صَعْبتِي

    How many bitter fruits of passion

    Have I been content to suffer!

  22. فالذُّلُّ للنَفسِ إذا ما عَصتْ

    والعزّ للنّفسِ إذا ولّتِ

    For the soul is base when it transgresses

    And noble when it resists.

  23. فقلْ لُحسَّادِيَ لا زِلْتُمُ

    في حَسَدٍ ثاوٍ على نعمَتي

    So say to those who envy me persistently

    In malicious envy of my fortune:

  24. لا تعضِهوني بالّذي فيكُمُ

    فَقدْ أَمنتمْ أبداً عَضْهتِي

    Do not blame me for what is in you;

    You are safe forever from my blame.

  25. الذّنْب لِي عندكُمُ أنّكمْ

    عجزتُمُ عمّا حَوَتْ قدرَتي

    My sin, in your eyes, is that

    You fall short of what my power encompasses,

  26. وأنّني قد كنتُ من دونكمْ

    أعقِرُ للأضيافِ في الأَزْمةِ

    And that I have been, more than you,

    Able to show generosity in times of crisis.

  27. والطّارقُ النازل أدنى إلى

    زادِيَ من أهلِي ومِن أُسرَتي

    The late night guest comes closer

    To my provisions than my family and kin.

  28. وكلّ داعٍ بي إلى نُصرةٍ

    سابقةٌ دعوتهُ نُصرتي

    And every caller asking my help

    Has his request answered before his call.

  29. لو جهدوا ما شَربوا من عَلٍ

    إِلّا الّذي أسْأَرْتُ من فضلتِي

    Had they tried, they would not have tasted

    Any excellence but what I have poured from my excess.

  30. وَلا رأَوْا قطُّ بِأَيديهمُ

    فضيلةً منِّيَ ما غُلَّتِ

    Nor would they have seen, in their own hands,

    Any merit in me which is not pure.

  31. وَكم بغَوْا دهراً فلم يظفِروا

    مِنِّي في المَزْلَقِ بالعَثْرةِ

    And how they have longed to find me slip

    Into error, but never succeeded!

  32. لَيستْ يدي مِنّيَ مردودةً

    وليس لِي رجْلِيَ إِن زلَّتِ

    My hand does not withdraw from me,

    Nor do my feet slip if they stumble.

  33. إِنْ تَفقدوني تَفقدوا منكُمُ

    فرّاجَ ذاك المُبْهَمِ المُصْمَتِ

    If you miss me, miss from amongst you

    That obscure brooding silent one.

  34. حقّرَ شأني أنّنِي ضائعٌ

    عندكُمُ أَبكي عَلى ضيعتي

    You deemed me insignificant

    As I wept over my ruin amongst you.

  35. أَقتاتُ غيظي فإذا عِفْتُهُ

    خرجتُ من غيظٍ إلى عِفّةِ

    I quell my rage, and when I am calm,

    I emerge from rage into tranquility.

  36. بَينَ أُناسٍ أنَا ما بينهُمْ

    في كَمدٍ باقٍ وفي حَسْرةِ

    Amongst people, I am like one

    Who is forever sad and forever sorry.

  37. خَيرُهُمُ شرُّ اِمرِئٍ في الورى

    وحيُّهُمْ بالنَّوك كالميِّتِ

    Their best is the worst of mankind

    And their consciousness is like death.

  38. أنفقُ فما لستُ أرضى بِهِ

    شرْخَ شبابي وشَبا مَيْعَتِي

    I spend yet I am not pleased with what

    Erodes my prime and my life's springtime.

  39. دَعْ جانبَ الذُلِّ لمنْ حَلَّهُ

    فما به شيءٌ من الخيْرَةِ

    Leave aside dishonor for those possessed by it;

    In it lies nothing of value.

  40. ولا تُقِمْ في منزلٍ تعْتَلِي

    بهِ الأراذيل على العِلْيَةِ

    Do not stay where the vile

    Can attack the lofty.

  41. ولا مكانٍ يستوي عندَهُ

    دَرادِقُ الذَّوْدِ مع الجِلَّةِ

    Nor where the eminent and lowly

    Are esteemed alike.

  42. مَلِلْتموني والمُنى رَغْدَةٌ

    إِنْ كَثُرتْ في معشرٍ مُلَّتِ

    You bore me though comfort is plentiful

    When many share a burden.

  43. وَقَد عَلِمتمْ أَنّ أَموالكمْ

    تضحِي وتُمْسي في حِمى جُرْأتِي

    And you know that your wealth

    Rises and sets under the protection of my boldness.

  44. سددتُ عنهنَّ فروقَ الرَّدى

    بالطّعنةِ الفَوهاء والضّربةِ

    I have warded off the gaps of destruction

    With piercing stabs and strikes.

  45. والخيلُ تنجو كسروبِ القطا

    أو نَعَمٍ في غُرْبةٍ شُلَّتِ

    And the horses survive the fragments of lances

    Or blessings in desolate places weakened.

  46. يَحفِزُها الطَّعنُ فلو سامَها

    دخولَ خرقٍ ضيّقٍ مرّتِ

    The stab provokes them, and if a narrow,

    Constricted rent confronts them,

  47. وفي القنا تُبدِل أجلادَها

    مسودّةَ اللّوْنِ بمُحمَرّةِ

    They change their dark complexions

    Into redness on the lances.

  48. فَوق قرا ضامرةٍ جَسْرَةٍ

    ما شدّت الرّيحُ كما شَدَّتِ

    Above desolate, crumbling bridges

    Where the winds have not blown as they blow,

  49. ذاتِ وَقارٍ يوم سِلْمٍ فإنْ

    رأت بعينيها وغىً جُنّتِ

    Noble ones, calm one day, when

    They see with their eyes the tumult of war,

  50. هلْ أنهَلَتْهَا علقاً مائراً

    إلّا يدي في الرَّوْعِ أو علَّتِ

    Have they ever been made to drink at the pool

    Except by my hands in the heat of battle?

  51. في موقفٍ دَحْضٍ كأنّ الفتى

    مُستوقَفٌ فيه على جَمْرةِ

    In a terrible, appalling stance as if the youth

    Stands halted over burning embers,

  52. تبتلُّ أرجاءٌ لهُ يَبْسَةٌ

    رشائشَ الطّعن إذا بَلّتِ

    His limbs quiver and wither,

    Scourged by the piercing blows of spears.

  53. لا تُدنِنِي من عاقدٍ أنفَهُ

    ملآنَ من تِيهٍ ومن نَخْوَةِ

    Do not bring me near one whose nose

    Is filled with confusion and languor,

  54. مُدامِجٍ همّتُهُ كلُّها

    مصروفةٌ في نصبِ أُغلوطةِ

    Whose only ambition is centered

    On erecting pretentious nonsense.

  55. لَيس عن الغيِّ لهُ عَرْجَةٌ

    ولا له في الرّشد من نهضةِ

    He turns not from sin,

    Nor rises to righteousness.

  56. فَلن تَراني أبداً راغباً

    في خَرِقٍ يزهدُ في رغبتي

    Never will you see me desirous

    Of a breach that spurns my desire,

  57. وما أُبالي بعد خُبْرٍ بهِ

    صرّح أو صمَّمَ في خُلّتِي

    Nor do I care, after knowing it,

    Who disclosed or concealed my secrets.

  58. سَأَركَب الهَول فإمّا على

    شامخةٍ أو أكرم الموتةِ

    I will ride the terrors, either on

    A towering steed or the noblest kind of death.

  59. فَربّما نلتُ الّذي أبتغي

    مجتهداً أو بَرِئتْ ذمّتي

    Perhaps I will attain what I seek

    By striving, or be cleared of blame.
