أيّها الشّيخُ إنّ مَن ثَوَّرَ الصَّي
دَ كمن صاده بحُكمِ العقولِ
O Sheikh, he who rebels against fate
Is like one who contends with reason's rule
هِجتَ مِنِّي على القوافي جَناناً
لم يكن عن بديعها بكليلِ
You blamed me for the rhymes' gardens
Though their elegance was unmatched
فطمى بحرُ خاطري فترامى
فيه قولي من غير معنىً مقولِ
So the sea of my mind was weaned
And my words wandered in it meaninglessly
ذلك الفضل إذ دللتَ على الفض
لِ ولابدّ في السُّرى من دليلِ
That grace, when you showed me excellence
And in life's journey a guide is surely needed
