What ails hearts on Saturday morn, so troubled,

And tears on Saturday flow, so freely?

Men don their finest robes and walk about,

Since they have learned what they have learned.

The tears of saddened eyes flow down

As if weeping for grave calamity and harm.

It seems today we're torn by grief

And tyranny's injustice we helplessly bear.

We fold our palms, ashamed of our blows,

And anguished sighs from our breasts burst forth.

We hide our pain and conceal our grief,

Yet how can one conceal what can't be hid?

Oh Death, many a noble soul hast thou undone,

Rendering spears and swords as useless things.

Full many a home hast thou breached, unbidden,

With guards and servants posted at its gate.

Full many a mighty man hast thou o'erpowered,

For all his pomp and temporal grandeur.

None thwart thy will, lofty or lowly,

Neither youth nor age can make escape.

Alas, our lives now burn with rage and spite,

And our bodies by decrepitude are seized.

Where are they who trod upon this earth,

    Who enjoyed life's bounty and vied in fortune;

Who ruled o'er plains and mountains far and wide,

Bestowed with blessings unmatched before or since,

Until they reached their predestined time,

Safely passing days that others feared,

Leaving in grieving hearts no memory,

Save the remnants of their crumbling tombs,

Reclining on a bare and cheerless side,

Darkened, with no flags or signs to mark the spot,

As if thick clouds had sealed their eyes,

Or dire sickness had consumed their bodies.

Unthinking now, no thoughts occur to them,

Hands folded, knowing neither fear nor hope.

Let not their present state deceive you,

For theirs is an existence utter void.

Say to the minister, though great his loss,

Vain his laments for what the pen has writ.

That which has caused your torment and your grief

Is gone, as people and nations before.

Long you rejoiced without the least misgiving,

While those bereaved found yourselves blamed.

The grief you feel today is consequence

Of what once brought you joy and pleasure.

    ونحن قبلك بالبَأْساءِ نَسْتَهِمُ

    You've been afflicted with no special doom;

We too calamity and trial have known.

Endure, your patience brings a gift divine

That will remain when all you've given is gone.

Be as the exemplars you revere,

    Who met misfortune with forbearance.

Never complaining of what befell them,

Until their faith became the cause of their complaint.

The destiny you mourn has run its course,

Now what behooves is knowledge and nobility.
