1. عِتابٌ لِدهرٍ لا يَمَلُّ عتابي

    وشَكوى إِلى مَنْ لا يردّ جوابي

    Reproach of an age that does not tire my reproaches,

    And complaint to one who does not answer my call,

  2. وَأَطلُبُ ما أَعيا الرّجالَ طِلابُه

    فَيا لِلحِجى كَم ذا يَكونُ طِلابي

    I seek what men have wearied themselves seeking,

    So how great my need, how long my quest!

  3. وَبِي ما أَذودُ النّاسَ عن باب علمِهِ

    وكلُّ أُساتي جاهلون بما بِي

    In me is a science men do not grasp,

    While all my peers are ignorant of my knowledge.

  4. فلِي كَبِدٌ تَصلى بغيرِ خريدةٍ

    وَلِي جَسدٌ يبلي بغير كَعابٍ

    I have a heart that prays with no ritual,

    And a body that suffers without sin.

  5. إِذا لَم أُرَغْ عند الغوانِي تغزّلاً

    فَمثلُ مشيبي بينهنَّ شَبابي

    If I indulge the wanton in their sport,

    My hoary hair resembles their youth.

  6. وَلَو كنتُ يوماً بالخِضاب موكَّلاً

    خضبتُ لمَن يَخفي عليهِ خضابي

    And were I tasked one day with henna,

    I would henna one who hides not my dye.

  7. فَإِن تعطِني أولى الخِضاب شبيبةً

    فإنّي أُخيراه بغير شبابٍ

    And if you give me youth in my old age,

    I shall treat it as senility without youth.

  8. وَأَين منَ الإِصباحِ صِبغةُ غَيْهبٍ

    وَأَين مِنَ البازيّ لون غُرابٍ

    Where is the saffron at dawn, dye of sunset?

    Where is the raven hue in the hue of crow?

  9. وقد قلّصتْ خَطْوِي الليالي وشمّرتْ

    برَوْحاتها من جيئتِي وذهابي

    The nights have straitened my steps,

    Binding their departure and my coming.

  10. وَكَم ظَفر الأقوامُ في البيض كالدُّمى

    بفُوفِ المنى منهنَّ لا بثيابِ

    And how many a people won at dice

    Like idols, not for their raiment.

  11. وَلِي هِممٌ لمّا طَمحْنَ إلي العُلا

    طمحْنَ كثيراتٍ وقلّ صِحابي

    I have resolves when they aspire on high

    Aspiring oft, though few my friends.

  12. فمِنْ عذْبِ أزوادِ النّزاهةِ مطعمِي

    ومن ماءِ أحواض العَفاف شرابي

    My food is the nectar of virtuous provision,

    My drink from the pool of modesty.

  13. فأيّ بلادٍ ما خرقتُ فِجاجها

    وَفي أَيّ أَرضٍ لم تدُرَّ سحابي

    What land have I not pierced its chasms?

    What land have I not crossed its dunes?

  14. وَأَيّ صَديقٍ لَم تُصبْه مثوبتي

    وَأَيّ عدوٍّ لَم يَنلهُ عِقابي

    What friend have I not visited in his affliction?

    What foe have I not punished for his deed?

  15. أُريدُ الغنى مِن غيرِ ما جانب الغنى

    فسهمِيَ لا يُصمى وسيفِيَ ناب

    I seek wealth without deviating from wealth,

    So my arrow hits not awry, nor my sword bend.

  16. وَفي راحَتي أَسعى وَمن دونِ راحتِي

    ركوبُ شِماساتِ المتون صِعابِ

    At ease I strive, and without ease

    Is riding the beast’s withers torture.

  17. وَربّ أُناسٍ جارِعي مُرَّ بِغْضَتِي

    وَأَضلُعُهم ملأى بخبّ ضَبابِ

    And many a biter my bitterness turned aside,

    Their ribs filled with the murk of clouds.

  18. بَطيئينَ عنّي ناكِصينَ عَنِ الّتي

    رَقَيْتَ إِلَيها من قلالِ هضابِ

    Lagging from me, retreating from my ascent

    To which you climbed from the slopes of hills.

  19. وَلَمّا جرَوْا يَرجونَ سَبْقي إِلى العُلا

    مَضيتُ وَلَمّا يَلحَقوا بترابي

    When they raced hoping to outstrip me,

    I went, and when they sought to match my dust,

  20. يريدونَ أَن أَشقى برَجْع خطابِهمْ

    وَمنْ فيهم يستطيعُ رَجْعَ خطابي

    They wished my words confound me in returning,

    But who among them can return my words?

  21. وَودّوا وأنّى ما يَودّون أنّهم

    أصابوا معاباً لِي وأين معابي

    They wished, though they wished not, that they

    Had found in me a fault, but where are my faults?

  22. وَمُذْ أَخطَأوا بابَ الصّواب ونكّبوا

    عَنِ الرّشدِ باتوا حاسِدينَ صَوابي

    And when they missed the path of right, swerving

    From guidance, they persisted envying my rightness.

  23. وَقَد صَفِرتْ مِن كُلّ مَجدٍ أكفّهُمْ

    ولم تخلُ من مجدٍ حَوَتْهُ وِطابي

    Their palms faded of every glory,

    While mine were filled with glory and grace.

  24. ولمّا تناهبنا النّدى جئتُ راكباً

    سنامَ النّدى في كلّ يومِ نِهابِ

    And when we snatched the dew, I came riding

    The dew at dawn each day voraciously.

  25. وَقَد عَلِموا أنّي عَلى غيرِ ريبةٍ

    تُلَطُّ سُجوفي ثمّ يُغلَق بابي

    They knew I was not to be tempted

    With wiles, then barred my door.

  26. وإنّي وأَدناسُ الزّمان كَثيرةٌ

    مَررتُ فَلم تَعلقْ بهنّ ثِيابي

    Many are the base souls I have passed

    And my robe clung not to them.

  27. وَما كانَ جاري وَالقِرى يستفزّه

    مَروعاً وقد وافى بِنَبحِ كلابي

    I feared no villages to provoke me

    Though I was barked at by their dogs.

  28. وَلا طارِقِي يرجو ثوابِيَ عائداً

    بعسرٍ ولا يُسرٍ بغير ثوابِ

    No knocker hoping for my reward

    Came in hardship or ease without reward.

  29. فَقلْ للعدى كونوا جميعاً بنجوَةٍ

    إذا ماج تيّاري وجُنّ عُبابي

    Say to my foes, beware altogether

    When my torrent flows and clouds rally.

  30. وَلا تَأمَنوا وَالشرّ ينتجُ بِالأَذى

    وَقَد سَحَّ وَدْقِي أَنْ تَسيلَ شِعابي

    Trust not when evil sprouts in harm

    My hand has poured and my cliffs gushed.

  31. وَوثبة مَفتول الذّراعِ قُصاقِصٍ

    يُساعد ظُفراً في الصّريع بنابِ

    The bound of his bicep, a serpent

    Whose claws grasp the fallen in sleep

  32. هجومٍ عَلى الأقرانِ لَم يَثنِ كيدَه

    كَميٌّ بِإقدامٍ ولا بهِبابِ

    Charging his peers, his wile never weakened

    Like a torrent, not pausing or fleeing

  33. تَبوعٍ لحوقٍ في يديهِ طِلابه

    وَما كلُّ باغٍ فائزاً بطِلابِ

    Hunting and overtaking, his wants in his hands

    Not every desirer succeeds in his wants

  34. ثَوى الغابَ مَرهوبَ المكانِ وما الرّدى

    يُلاقيه إلّا في خبيئةِ غابِ

    He dwelt in the thickets, frightened of places

    And met but in the cover of thickets.

  35. تَرى حولَهُ أَسلابَ قومٍ ولم يكنْ

    ليحفل في مَنْ بزّه بسِلابِ

    Around him the spoils of a people, yet he cared not

    For who excelled him in spoils.

  36. وَما لحظُهُ إلّا كَنجمَيْ دُجُنَّةٍ

    وَلا بَطشُهُ إلّا كَمثل حِرابِ

    His gaze only two stars in darkness

    His might only like the flight of arrows

  37. له زَفرةٌ مِن فوق جنب صريعهِ

    كما صُكَّ صُلْبٌ يابسٌ بصِلابِ

    Over his fallen foe a roar

    As if a rigid timber flogged with scourges

  38. حَكتْ زَفرة المغلوب حزناً وخيبةً

    وما هي إلّا زفرةٌ لِغلابِ

    The roar of the defeated laments in sorrow

    Though it is but the roar of victors.

  39. وَنهشةَ مَسموم اللِّثاثِ لعابُهُ

    خَروقٌ إلى الأرداءِ كلّ حجابُ

    The bite of lethal venom, his spittle

    Gashes unto the cervix every veil

  40. تَراه لَصوقاً بالتّراب كأنّه

    قطيعٌ طريحٌ أو سقيطُ حِقابِ

    You see him clinging to earth as if

    A flock collapsed or fruits of date palms felled

  41. لَه مَلْمَسٌ لَيْنٌ وَحشو أديمِهِ

    خشونةُ فرّاءٍ لكلِّ إِهاب

    Smooth is his touch, and the pelt of his hide

    Is the coarse coat of a well-wrapped lithe cloak

  42. يَسدُّ على السّاري الطريقَ مجرُّهُ

    وآثاره يحمين كلّ نِقابِ

    His tread blocks the path for travelers

    And his tracks guard every approach

  43. كأنّ عليه جبّةً وهو صائفٌ

    وفي القُرِّ عُريانٌ بغيرِ ثيابِ

    As if wearing a coat though naked

    In the burrows without any clothes

  44. يُمجّ سِماعاً في اللّديغِ كأنّه

    لُغامُ نياقٍ أو نضيح حِبابِ

    He sniffs listening in the ambush as if

    A she-leopard or the bellow of camels

  45. وما مشيُهُ إلّا تغضّنُ نِسْعَةٍ

    تَلَوَّى على كوماء ذاتِ هِبابِ

    His gait but the writhing of a serpent

    Twisting over sand dunes in mirage

  46. حُبابٌ بأعلى الواديين طريقُهُ

    وَما المَوتُ إِلّا في طَريق حبُابِ

    Asp on the heights is his path

    And death is but on the path of asps

  47. يَصمّ عنِ الرّاقي وَيحدُرُ ظامِئاً

    لدانٍ إِلى مطواه كلّ وئابِ

    He turns from the climber and descends thirsty

    To a lair, to every jackal’s den

  48. فَشاكٍ تَشكّاهُ بِغَيرِ تَعِلَّةٍ

    وماضٍ توخّاه بغير إيابِ

    Doubting without cause, resolved without return,

    Going without coming back.

  49. سَلِ البارقَ العلويّ ليلة شُمتَهُ

    وأعشى الكرى رَكْبي معاً ورِكابي

    Ask the lightning in the night of his demise

    To make my caravan and riders sleepless

  50. أَلستُ وَقَد خامَ الكماة عن الرّدى

    لَبِستُ طعاني نَحوه وضِرابي

    Am I not, though the warriors dismounted for rest,

    Donning my coat of mail against them?

  51. عَشِيّةَ هابَ الدّارعون تورُّدي

    هُناك وَهمّ الطاعنون جنابي

    At eve when the mail-clad grew pallid

    I was there, though the spearsmen avoided me,

  52. إِلى أَن رأوْا سَيفي وَرمحيَ في الطُّلى

    بِغَير أَنابيبٍ وغير ذُبابِ

    Till they saw my sword and spear in the twilight

    With no glitter or fluttering.

  53. وما حيلتِي أن كنتُ في سرّ أُسرَتي

    ولم يشركوا في صفوتي ولُبابي

    My stratagem that I divulged not my secret

    And they shared not my essence and core

  54. ولم أكُ يوماً قانعاً في فضيلةٍ

    بأصلي ولا في مَحتِدٍ بنصابي

    Never content in virtue with my origin

    Nor with the lawful in my lawful share

  55. وكنتُمْ وهاداً هابطاً ثمّ أنتُمُ

    تسامون في العلياء أهلَ روابِ

    While you were sedentary then declined

    You now ascend the lofty, people of hill-tops!

  56. وهيهات أن تستصبحوا في دُجُنَّةٍ

    بغير مصابيحٍ وغير شهابِ

    Never shall you see clearly in the darkness

    Without lamps or falling stars

  57. وَهَل فيكمُ إلّا مَلومٌ مُفَنَّدٌ

    ببذلِ أَساةٍ أو بمنع ثوابِ

    Is there not among you a condemned disappointer

    By neglecting duty or denying bounty?

  58. وَهل درّ يوماً خيرُكمْ وهو نازحٌ

    بشيءٍ سوى مسحي له وعِصابي

    And has the best of you moving house

    Ever poured me a drink or wrapped my turban?

  59. صحبتُكُمُ جهلاً بكم وملأتُ مِنْ

    عهودكمُ وهْيَ الضعاف عِيابي

    I kept your company in ignorance of you,

    And fulfilled your pledge – the weakest pledge!

  60. وإنْ فُتّكُمْ فضلاً فكم فات قبلكمْ

    سَبوقٌ على بُعد المدى لكوابِ

    If you claim some merit over others,

    How many outstripped you from afar!
