Youth's days have passed, their reins slipped from my hands at morn,
Their joys are changed, their abodes ruined and forlorn.
He who has lived through youth's prime knows it fades away,
And grey hairs come, when man turns night in day.
The loved ones left confess love's long lament;
The home is sad and sighs when they are sent.
Tell them from me, to cure their hearts of pain,
Absence is not the end, they'll meet again.
Desert and garden mourn for them no more
Since life maintains the loss it did deplore.
Morn's clouds spread out a prayer-mat on the hills,
Evening draws friendly veils across the rills,
Morning and eve, the birds and waters call
These travellers to rest or help them on their way.
And winnowing wind and cloud spread wide
The story of their mansions, far and wide.
The dove mourns her companion every night
With tears, lamenting loss of love and light.
The grove is gay no more, its songs are o'er,
The loss of youth and strength grieves manor, moor.
The fields so fair, the hunting grounds so wide
Are joyless now, with loss as in death's tide.
On the dear village site their homes are bare,
Scarce can he trace foundations in dark air.
The high-bosomed maidens go unveiled for shame
While modesty and manners are no longer named.
How noble seemed the feelings he professed!
How deep his sorrow late for all distressed!
How paled his cheek, his tears ran down like rain,
For heavy was the load of other's pain!
Yet knew I that such pangs were fancy's ills,
Trial alone reveals the constant will.
With fear of God he lived so righteous life,
Renouncing sin, unknown were passions' strife.
Patient he bore the toilsome sense-denied fast
Till stars of night were sunk in dawn at last.
Constant he stood, his guardian and his guide,
Faithful in loss, undaunteddid he bide.
A second always to the Prophet's side,
That Pillar of the Place, to all true Muslims wide.
Blest was that gardener in his arduous toils
Blest was his coming to the barren soils.
Like dawning day he lit earth with his beams
And truth shone out to end all doubt's extremes.
He bore the prophet to the bed to rest
When foes attacked whom faith had not impressed.
In every strait his constancy was known
Hope's rock, companion when left alone.
Thanks be to Allah for his mighty aid.
The valiant youth undid dull sloth's charade.
The noble landmarks stand by him renewed
While idols fell and all their power is subdued.
He comes like rising sun too bright for those
Who still in deepest dark feel dawn their foes.
He stands when champions dread the fight,
Renown and permanence are his by right.
Fear shrinks from the keen flame his valour lights,
But motherland and brethren he unites.
Wealth he esteems the means to noblest aims
And poverty lights up his glorious claims.
His hospitality all classes won, his trenchant wisdom solution brings,
Perplexities dissolve when he explains their cause.
He whom the scales of justice irk awry,
Whom tyrants threaten and oppressors try
Is overwhelmed at his clear light, made whole
As morning brilliance penetrates night's soul.
In piety sincere his path is plain,
Poor-due and prayers punctual, no act in vain.
In God's service each deed his goal designed,
In mankind's progress all his effort joined.
No blame can touch his rede integrity,
No enemy assault his purity.
Prone to deny, to curse and to distrust,
He meets such hate with mercy's deed august.
No multitude can match his high emprise,
Or poisoned archer pierce his motives wise.
False is the judgment of the jealous mind,
The slander fades before his truth refined.
How can I hope, by further praise, to pay
All gratitude this greatness could convey!
So many gifts divine, from God's grace sprung,
Though floods of words, still fall unsung.
