Ah, with many a necklace-wearing beauty have I shared
wine, its bubbles like the slough of the speckled serpent,
while the full moon on the sky’s horizon was like a dirham,
or a white blaze between the eyes of a jet-black horse—
until the face of dawn appeared as though it were
a friend’s forgiveness of his friend who had done wrong.
