بَلَغتُ الفَخرَ مِن هِمَمٍ رِفاعِ

وَلَم يَقصُر عَنِ العَلياءِ باعي

I have attained glory through lofty aspirations

And my reach did not fall short of the highest

لِأَنّي المَرءُ لَيسَ لَهُ اِعتِمادٌ

عَلى غَيرِ العَزائِمِ وَالمَساعي

For man has no reliance

Except on resolute determination and effort

نَداهُ بِحائِمِ الآمالِ بَحرٌ

وَأَنعُمُهُ لِسائِمِها مَراعي

The sea of hopes calls to the one who aspires

And its plains are refuge to the wearied

يَفِرُّ مِنَ الخَمولِ إِلى التَناهي

كَما فَرَّ الجَبانُ مِنَ الشُجاعِ

He flees from laziness to the farthest extent

As the coward flees from the valiant
