1. إِنّي لِأَمدَحُ أَقواماً أَظُنُّهُمُ

    يَقضونَ حَقَّ ثَنائي فَوقَ ما يَجِبُ

    I praise some people I think

    Will do me justice, nay, yet more

  2. فَإِن هُمُ وَهَبوا مَنّوا عَلَيَّ بِهِ

    فَالمَوتُ إِن نَجَلوا وَالمَوتُ إِن وَهَبوا

    If they accept, I live; if not, I die

    Though round their necks my songs are tied

  3. هَذا وَقَد أَلبَسَت أَجسادُهُم فِكري

    مِمّا تَصوغُ عُقوداً كُلَّها ذَهَبُ

    Like golden chains of Ophir wrought:

    The jewel’s virtue is unsought

  4. ذا الدُرُّ مَن كانَ دُرّاً فَهوَ يَلبَسُهُ

    فَكَيفَ يَنفُقُ وَالأَقوامُ مُخشَلَبُ

    If hearts lack wisdom. Of what worth

    Are jewels in a granite girth?
