1. قَد قُلتُ إِذ عاتَبَني جَليسي

    لَمّا رَأى داري بِلا مَلبوسِ

    When my companion reproached me

    For seeing my house so unfurnished -

  2. مِن كِلَلٍ تَصلُحُ لِلعَروسِ

    قَد قَنَعَ اللَيثُ بِهَذا الخيسِ

    No fine things fit for a bride within -

    I said to him, "Sir, my master,

  3. يا سَيِّدي أَنتَ وَيا رَئيسي

    عِمارَةُ الدارِ خَرابُ الكيسِ

    'Tis a lion that contents himself

    With this most mean and humble lair."
