لا أُحِبُّ المَرءُ إِن لَم

أَجِدِ المَرءَ عِفيفا

I do not love a man if I do not

find that man virtuous.

لا وَلا آلَفُ مَن لَم

يَكُ لِلخَيرِ أَلوفا

No, nor do I befriend one who is not

devoted to goodness.

شَرَفي يَمنَعُني مِن

وُدِّ مَن لَيسَ شَريفا

My honor keeps me from

loving one who is not honorable.
