صانَ قِناعُ القُنوعِ وَجهي
صِيانَةَ الغِمدِ لِلحُسامِ
My veil of contentment guarded my face
Like a scabbard guarding a sword
لِأَنَّني لا اَرى بِعَيني
مَن هُوَ مِن طينَةِ الكِرامِ
For I do not see with my eyes
One who shares the clay of nobility
بَل كُلُّ ذي ضِنَّةٍ وَبِشرٍ
كَالبَرقِ في العارِضِ الجَهامِ
Rather, the mean and joyful alike
Like lightning in ominous clouds
يَلوحُ مَلبوسُهُ عَلَيهِ
كَمِثلِ آلٍ عَلى رَغامِ
His clothes adorn him
Like a corpse dressed for burial
