We have a singer, good company,

And wine more fragrant than embers.

Don't withhold your hand from me, neither

    An apple nor raisins.

    We've kindled a fire devoid

    Of glowing embers within it.

If its flames at dawn die down,

My glutton brother's eye waters for it.

Be content with what your brother has,

Who contents himself with crumbs and broken bread.

A scrap from him would be princely,

Which the experienced would accept as bounty.

Why don't we give the day its due

    And gain wisdom from drunkenness?

By God! No camel's back will bear us

Until we see lessons in our drunkenness.
