Stand between the clash of waves and plateau
At the point of the two nations, Turk and Arab
In the abode of world power and its center
And the compass of earth from pole to pole
Where their Lord parted the two lands
And the two seas converged in great waves
And East faced West in its ancient attire
With its modern garb of rough fabric
The throat of strongholds, God protected it
With His grace, sweeter than honeycomb
Ever since the days of Constantine waiting
Eagerly for the Ottomans to seek it
Until armies came, no match for it
Who camped at Abu Ayyub's wide plain
Made its land submissive, a horn humbling
Alexander the piercer of clouds to the skies
Won the caliphate in days of Abu Lahab
With armies of enemies carrying firewood
So he extinguished the flames after the blaze
He saw separating the fire and tinder
