لَم تُبقِ بَعدَكَ في الخُطوبِ جَليلاً
مُذ شِئتَ يا عَبدَ العَزيزِ رَحيلا
After you left, Abd al-Aziz, no great man remains
Since you chose to depart, oh eminent one.
خَلَّفتَ لِلإِسلامِ أَيَّ مَناحَةٍ
طَمَت وَعَمَت عَرضَهُ وَالطولا
What legacy have you left Islam with?
It is obscure and its expanse has narrowed.
في كُلِّ أَرضٍ نَصَّ فيها مِنبَرٌ
يَتَذَكَّرونَ بُكرَةً وَأَصيلا
In every land where there was once a pulpit
They reminisce morning and night.
يَتَذَكَّرونَ مَواقِفاً مَشهورَةً
لَكَ لَيسَ تَترُكُ لِلمَراءِ سَبيلا
They reminisce your famous stands-
You left no room for contention.
وَمَآثِراً في الخافِقينَ حَديثَها
وَمَعالِياً رَنَت حَلى وَحُجولا
And your recent feats among the victorious-
And your sublime aspirations that ascended high.
ما العَبقَرِيَّةُ وَالَّتي يَصِفونَها
إِلّا حَياتَكَ مُثِّلَت تَمثيلا
What is this genius they describe?
Except your life embodied.
الخاطِرُ الوَقّادُ أَن يَبدُرَ مَضى
في الحادِثاتِ أَسِنَّةً وَنُصولا
The inspired mind gone-
That surged ahead into events.
وَالمَنطِقُ الفَيّاضُ أَن يَهدِرَ غَداً
يَتَدَفَّقُ الإِبداعُ مِنهُ سُيولا
And the eloquent tongue stilled-
That overflowed tomorrow in floods of creativity.
لا فَرقَ بَينَ السامِعيكَ وَقَد وَعوا
ما قُلتَهُ وَالشارِبينَ شُمولا
No difference between your listeners, so immersed,
And the quenched drinking directly from you.
وَإِذا جَرَرتَ عَلى الطُروسِ يَراعَةً
باتَ الصَريرُ بِراحَتَيكَ صَليلا
When you pulled the reins taut-
The jingling settled softly in your palms.
تِلكَ اليَراعَةُ وَدَّ أَكبَرَ قائِدٍ
لَو أَنَّها في كَفِّهِ لِيَصولا
Those taut reins would please the greatest leader
If he could wield them to charge ahead.
تَتجاوَبُ الآفاقُ عَن أَصدائِها
وَيَرتُلونَ فُصولَها تَرتيلا
The horizons echo its reverberations-
And chant its verses in hymns.
هَيهاتَ يا عَبدَ العَزيزِ أَخو عَلى
مَن دَركِ شَأوِكَ يَبلُغُ المَأمولا
Alas Abd al-Aziz, brother in God-
One who attained your stature reaches his hopes.
لَم يَعلَمُ الخَلقُ الكَريمُ وَلا الحَيا
مَن لَيسَ يَعلَمُ خَلقَكَ المَعسولا
Neither humankind nor life itself knew
One whose charming nature they did not know.
لَم يَعلَم الآدابَ كَيفَ تَجَسَّمَت
بِشراً فَتى لَم يَصطَحِبكَ طَويلا
Etiquette did not know how it was embodied
In a gallant man who did not accompany you long.
فَكَأَنَّ رَبَّكَ عِندَ خَلقِكَ قَد أبى
أَن لا تَكونَ مُكمِلاً تَكيملا
It is as if your Lord, when creating you, refused
That you not be perfected.
تَغدو أَرَقَّ مِنَ النَسيمِ فَإِن عَرا
خَطبَ غَدَوتَ الصارِمَ المَسلولا
You rise gentler than the breeze but if passions flare
You turn into a drawn sword.
في نِعمَةِ الحَمَلِ الوَديعِ فَإِن عَدا
عادَ تَرى أَسَداً يُفارِقُ غيلا
In the blessing of placid bearing but if transgressed
You see a lion separate from its pack.
أَسَدٌ مَتى يَزأَر لِأُمَّةِ أَحمَدٍ
مَلَأَ الفُراتَ زَئيرَهُ وَالنيلا
A lion, when it roars for Ahmad's nation
It fills the Euphrates and Nile with its roar.
شيحانِ لَم يُبصِر عَلَيها ذِلَّةً
إِلّا وَمَدَّ ذِراعَهُ المَفتولا
Valiant one who did not see humiliation imposed
Without extending his strong arm.
رَضِيَ المَصائِبَ وَالنَوائِبَ وَالنَوى
وَالحَبسُ حَتّى لا يَعيشَ ذَليلا
Content with tribulation, misfortune and suffering
Even imprisonment, lest he live in disgrace.
يَعفو الجَرائِرَ نَحوَهُ طَرّاً وَلا
يَعفو إِذا الإِسلامُ غُضَّ فَتيلا
He pardons offenses against him swiftly
But does not pardon if Islam's flame is extinguished.
جَعَلَ الجِهادَ نَصيبَهُ عَن قَومِهِ
فَقَضى الحَياةَ مُغَرَّباً مَجفولا
He made jihad for his people his purpose
And lived out his life estranged and deprived.
لا تَعظَمُ الأَخطارَ في أَبصارِهِ
ما دامَ يُبصِرُ حَقَّهُم مَأَكولا
Dangers do not seem great in his eyes
As long as he sees their rights unfulfilled.
يا راحِلاً أَبقى فَراغاً هائِلاً
هَيهاتَ تَملَأُهُ الرِجالُ فُحولا
Oh you who left a great void-
Alas, only the extraordinary can fill it.
آلَيتَ لا أَنفَكُّ عَهدَكَ راعِياً
حَتّى أُغَرَّبَ في التُرابِ مَهيلا
I swore I will not forget our bond, guardian,
Until I am buried in the soil.
غادَرتَ لي قَلباً عَلَيكَ مُقَطَّعاً
دامي الصَميمِ وَمَدمَعاً مَوصولا
You left me a heart torn apart for you
Flowing with my lifeblood and tears.
وَسَأَلتُ دَمعي أَن يُجيبَ جَوانِحي
فَاِنباعَ يَجري سائِلاً مَسئولا
And I asked my tears to answer my soul
So it poured forth questioning and questioned.
أَنسى لَعَمري والِدَيَّ وَعَترَتي
إِن كُنتُ أَنسى فَضلَكَ المَسجولا
May I forget my parents and family
If I forget your recorded favors.
إِذ أَنتَ بَرٌّ بي كَما نَفسي وَإِذ
تَغدو عَليلاً أَن أَكونَ عَليلا
Since you are righteous to me as myself
And if you fall ill, I fall ill.
إِنّي أَحِنُّ إِلى اِجتِماعِ الشَملِ في الأُخ
رى كَأَنّا في الحَياةِ الأولى
I yearn for our reunion in the hereafter
As if we are in the former life.
رُبَّ الوَفاءِ وَصَفوَهُ الخِلانِ قُل
أَتَرَكتَ بَعدَكَ مَن أُعِدُّ خَليلا
Best of companions and essence of intimacy, say:
Did you leave one like you, kept secret?
يا صاحِبَ القِدحِ المُعَلّى في العُلى
أَتَرَكتَ مِثلَكَ يا سِراً فَيَجيلا
Events have concealed their wounds from you
While the sword earns stripes from the executioner!
أَبقَت عَلَيكَ الحادِثاتُ كَلومُها
وَالسَيفُ يَكسَبُ بِالجَلادِ فَلولا
Your existence inspired lofty ambition
To ascend into the highest heaven.
شَفَّت وُجودُكَ هِمَّةٌ جَبّارَةٌ
تَجِدِ الصُعودَ إِلى السِماكِ نُزولا
Do you think I will remain abundant after you?
Alas, remaining has become scarce.
أَتَظُنُّ أَن تَمضي وَأَبقى وافِراً
هَيهاتَ قَد صارَ البَقاءُ قَليلا
Oh Master, out of love for you
Abd Al-Aziz passed away infatuated and bemused.
يا أَيُّها المَولى بِحُبِّكَ قَد مَضى
عَبدُ العَزيزِ مُتَيَّماً مَتبولا
Rain upon the soil the rain of acceptance
And make him, Lord, near You a lodger.
أَمطَرَ عَلى ذاكَ الثَرى غَيثَ الرِضى
وَاِجعَلهُ رَبِّ لَدى عِلاكَ نَزيلا
He was one who acted with goodness in life
So reward him in the Abode of Eternity with goodness.
قَد كانَ فَعّالُ الجَميلِ حَياتَهُ
فَأَثبَهُ في دارِ المَعادِ جَميلا
