Sol 5.6

  1. O son of ʿAbd Allāh, O you who

    are my loving, intimate friend,

  2. I wonder: are you, like me,

    faithful to those pledges?

  3. I am in Fez, and yet

    my heart has settled among you,

  4. where the Brethren of Purity are,

    where the lords of the earth are.

  5. O kindred soul, tell me:

    have you forgotten the pledge I gave you

  6. and shunned meeting me

    because I—because I—

  7. repented of wine unto Go—

    —d? And why should I not repent?

  8. It robs me of my time and wealth;

    after it, my body melts away.

  9. God has endowed him with a mystery,

    especially when he smiles,

  10. when, with verses of poe—

    —try, you see him sing.
