1. Do not blame him if he shows some aloofness;

    for he is a gazelle, and gazelles are skittish by nature.

  2. God has ordained in love whatever He has ordained:

    thus one is wretched in loving him, and another blessed.

  3. And I am the one who taught him—praise be to God—

    for his sake my misery grows with every day.

  4. And whenever fortune smiles on me, even for a day,

    thunderclaps follow its lovely calm.

  5. And Abu Hamid—were it not for him, more enamored

    of me would be my gazelle, and all I desire would be fulfilled.

  6. It is no wonder when one close to me grows jealous;

    the wonder is that the distant one should grow jealous.

  7. O my loving friend, by God, tell me:

    Is this how a loving friend behaves?
