عجِبتُ لبعضِ بني آدمٍ
وبي عند ذِكرِهِمُ خَجلُ
I marvel at some of Adam’s children,
and shame comes over me when they are mentioned.
على اللهِ يَقوَى تَجَاسُرهُ
ومِن غيرِه خائِفٌ وَجِلُ
Against God, their audacity grows strong,
yet they fear anyone other than Him, trembling.
تَدَجَّوا نُفوساً فَأتقَاهُمُ
يُثابُ عَلى لَعنِه الرَّجُلُ
Their souls have grown so dark that even the most God-fearing among them
is someone a man is rewarded for cursing.
