1. Mountains of care weigh upon my shoulders,

and an army of adversities rises from within me.

  2. They came upon me one after another, catching me unawares,

though I had never been a bearer of sorrow.

  3. Then the vast reaches of space closed in around me,

and I no longer held any hope in life.

  4. Had weeping been able to avail a young man,

it would have availed the man of streaming tears.

  5. So I said, “I will seek refuge in it; perhaps it will

ease some of this deathly grief.”

  6. So I sought refuge in it, like molten gold,

that dislodges the reason of a sensible young man.

  7. But it brought the very opposite of my hopes; indeed, it increased

my cares atop the grief already descended upon me.

  8. It veiled my sight and pronounced

a final sentence upon my fading reason.
