قُرنفُلةً حمراءَ أهدى ابنُ سُودةٍ
كَوَجنتَِهِ حمراءَ طَيِّبَةَ النَّشرِ
Ibn Sawda gave a red carnation—
red as his cheek, and sweetly fragrant;
ومبسِمُه الدِّرّي تَأرَّجَ عِطرُهُ
ولم ترَ من دُرٍّ تَنَفسَّ عَن عِطِر
and his pearly smiling mouth—its perfume wafted.
Never have you seen a pearl breathe forth perfume.
فَهاجَ بهَا مَا كانَ في القَلبِ كَامِناً
وأضرمَ في الأحشاءِ مُتَّقَد الجَمرِ
At it, what had lain hidden in the heart surged up,
and kindled within the vitals the glow of embers.
