    ever grateful for your work.

  2. Through you—how beautiful art is! And through...

art as well—how beautiful you are!

  3. You have enchanted the East—glory be to Him who

made you enchant the West as well.

  4. Do you know what you are doing

to people’s souls, or have you no knowledge?

  5. And if you do know,

who drove you to slay humankind?

the West never sees you? How just you are!

  9. Then, as for touring throughout your kingdom—oh,

would I knew what business has kept you!

  10. A teller has told us of you; so tell—

us: are you sorcery, or are you an angel?

  11. We saw you on the screen as

it revolved with you like a star in its orbit.

  12. And we watched you, having engraved art

upon it, just as it had recorded you.

  13. At the dawn of an art whose sun went dark,

go forth through art, a light amid the darkness.

  14. For art’s condition in your past has made...

    its future your own future.

  15. And blessed is the medal that yearned for...

art upon a breast, and with it has kissed you.

  16. God has bestowed upon you the highest rank,

placing you in the hearts of all the people.

  17. O nightingale whose bough, whenever

it sings, sways beneath it and breaks:

  18. it is my soul. With my own soul, I...
