يَا رَعى اللهُ إخوَةً كَتَبُوا لي
وَأنا فِي ظَلامِ تِلكَ السُّجُونِ
Ah, may God watch over the brethren who wrote to me,
While I was in the darkness of those prisons.
وَفَتَحنَا كتَابَهُم فَرَأينَا
كلَّ حُبٍّ وكلَّ وُدٍّ مَصونِ
We opened their letter, and there we saw
Every love and every affection, faithfully preserved.
أطرَبُونِي بِقَولِهِم لَيتَهُم قد
عَرَفُوا كَم بِقَولِهِم أطرَبُونِي
Their words transported me—if only they had
Known how deeply their words transported me.
سَجَنُونِي فَأَحزنُونِي وَقَالُوا
فَلتَدُم حَالةُ السَّجِينِ الحَزِينِ
They imprisoned me, saddened me, and said:
“Let the sorrowful prisoner’s plight endure.”
