I have sought to describe you—a duty that must be met—
yet in what rhyme and meter shall I compose?
And with what meaning, one wonders, can I describe the one
who, when praised, surpasses every meaning?
Will verse betray me today, though I am
lord of verse, and sovereign over rhymes?
No—by your worth, it shall not be; for these
are your fair qualities, of which I sing.
Indeed, the virtues—innate in you—
are the bracelet, and you the wrist it clasps.
O Tihami Pasha, whose station has won
preeminence throughout the worlds,
the Noble Sanctuary and its Corner longed for you,
and the Hatim and Zamzam longed for the sight of you.
Your forefather called you, and you heeded his summons,
your heart all the while brimming with burning yearning.
Does the heart shed tears while longing pulls,
and tears pour down from passion’s excess?
How many a pilgrimage season passed—yet only
through you did this season trail the robe of pride.
If only I had been there, present,
to see with my own eyes the full moon ringed by stars.
Would that my master would send me on before him—
I, the humble servant, the poet who speaks.
When a great man sets out toward a destination,
he must have a servant going before him.
He is present if his master calls his name;
otherwise, he wins the bounty of a great reward.
Let our lord pardon and forgive me if I have
ventured upon what once made me hold back.
That is only because I am certain
that the forbearing, even when provoked, still forbears.
By God, were it not that after your departure
I remain like a bereaved mother whose heart aches,
and the world, for all its spacious breadth, closes in on me,
and its light turns dark within my eyes,
and I spend the night in anguish that tears my heart apart
if you should vanish from my sight—
I would not seek what I do not understand:
whether I shall regret it afterward, or not.
But my hope in you always overcomes
my fear of your power, which is greater still.
So remain steadfast in doing what is gracious,
and never tire of graciousness and its practice.
Promise us that—even if only for a coming year—
and when you promise, surely I shall enter ihram.
And may you go beneath God’s shelter, enclosing you,
with the wing of His protection spread over your return.
